Swords are cliche because they are easy to use as well as versatile. For somebody with little proficiency in the beginning swords just make the most sense.

Bow and Arrow, Staff, Spear I feel are underused.

Scythe is also neat. Yes, it's in reality a terrible thing to use as a weapon, as it isn't one and wasn't designed to be one, it's a farming tool. But it just looks cool.

And if a sword really has to be used, can it please be a reasonably sized one used in pair with a shield?

Grayfox2510: The three characters you don't recall or haven't used, Chris, Geddoe and Lazlo, all use swords.
