Ok so after beating 3 n 4 golden, i figured i might give persona 2 and 1 a try. I tried it a while back n gave up cuz i didnt like the combat because i didnt like putting on shows for my enemies and such, but thinking about giving it another try cuz the story does look intriguing. What do u guys think?

Persona 1 is very hit-or-miss with people.

Persona 2 has the best story in the series and is a lot more mature than 3 and 4. Gameplay hasn't aged well, though.

There's always the other Shin Megami Tensei games if you're interested in those, too

Well, you have SMT3: Nocturne, SMT Digital Devil Saga 1&2 all for the PS2. SMT: Strange Journey and SMT: Soul Hackers for 3DS. The earlier SMT are from the SNES and older era. There are some other spin-offs like the strategy rpg series for DS with ports to 3DS, and the Raidou(sp?) games for ps2. I would recommend Nocturne to see if you like it, or the DDS games if you want something more in the vein of a "traditional" rpg.

They're all pretty good, but if you're looking for getting into the main series I suggest Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne for PS2 or Shin Megami Tensei IV for 3DS.

Take note: The stories are a lot more mature, yet less wordy (cutscenes are few and far between and are fairly short) and they are incredibly difficult.

Also if you're easily offended by controversial depictions of Christian beings (God's a huge ****, for example) then I'd stay away, lol.

Yeah, I can't believe I forgot SMT4, and I mistakenly listed Strange Journey as a 3DS game when it is actually a DS game.

ah ok cool ill probably try nocturne and the digital sagas, cant afford a 3ds right now lol. Also just wondering are any of these games in the same universe as persona (I know the shin megami tensei games have different ending each in their own universe and stuff, but just needed to check. Cuz some overlap into one another and stuff)? or like taking place at the same time, but different places? I want to play shin megami tensei 4, but wish their was an emulator for it lol.

Short answer: Yes. You don't need to know how to enjoy them, however

Long answer: If you don't mind minor spoilers for games in the series I made a video on this subject:
