Tips for Alatreon?

#1bezlaskezPosted 11/24/2013 6:33:19 AM
Hi guys,

So I had a little break from MH after reaching an impasse at the second tier of G rank (on Stygian Zin). Just got back into and completed some G rank quests I used to be stuck on, and Mark of the Hero.

I've not fought Alatreon since back when MH Tri was still going strong, and only then with 4 players and only twice.

I'm a SA user mostly (they're the only weapon tree I now have at G rank, though I'm not averse to returning to SnS or using bows on this file, though it might take a while to get back), but Ala keeps handing me my backside on a platter.

Anyone got any tips for a solo run? Is SA viable (I'm using the fully upgraded brachy SA, but have no aversion to grinding for something else).

Cheers!

The easiest ways of farming him include burst damage weapons like Hammers and GS and consistently punishing his head while he's turning around (many youtube vids on that, and you probably know that already from Tri). The Kelbi Bow is really the only worthwile ranged weapon against him, since he takes so pitiful amounts of shot damage... And it's not a fun fight with that weapon, imo. The best approach with other weapon types is probably to stay at his back paws, and pummel him to death while watching out for his turn-claw attacks, though I could be horribly wrong with that, since I haven't fought him a lot with other weapon types.

Yeah the times I fought him before were with hammer and lance, but I've not used them on 3U, maybe it's time to reinvest, though I'm going to want to cut tails at some point (I'm useless with GS, though I've never given it much thought so maybe it's time to practice up).

Yeah I don't want to Kelbi Bow particularly (I've no aversion to slime in general as their power is usually offset by less sharpness and Ala doesn't seem too vulnerable to it).

I'll keep trying for now, but maybe it's time I do some multiplayer to make farming G rank quicker...

Even though its in japanese, he shows a lot of openings to charge and attack Alatreon with GS. Its village rank, but the tactics are the same with G rank:

Hunting horn. 23 min vid

Note, some may have godly charms, so your times will vary (especially that hunting horn guy). But the strategies are still there.

Thanks for the above links!

After a few hours practising this afternoon, I'm getting better; I think I'm getting good damage (managed to break horns and claws in around 15 mins) but I'm not avoiding enough of his attacks by making stupid mistakes like grabbing ballista ammo and getting hit by his aerial charge, or getting in the way of his dragon headbutt.

Also I don't think my Rath Soul is holding up too well, I might go in for a gunning set instead if it gets too tough.

I'm sure I'll get it in the end, I've managed everything else so far. Cheers for the vids and tips.
