Never played an FE game before

and looking back at screenshots of the old games, I really don't feel like trying them out. I have a long back log of Vita games I need to finish too.
I'm really excited for this and Megaten 4 coming out next year on the 3ds though.

My question is, if I haven't played any of the other FE, would I have trouble enjoying this game? Are they connected?
I'm an RPG fan, so the battle system and the anime style will NOT bother me at all.

Nope nothing will be bad for a first timer-- hell, with Casual mode, I'd say FEA is even more newcomer friendly than FE7 (the usual go-to FE for newcomers), although some of the DLC stuff and a few references here and there might slide past you, but that's nothing big.
Yes, all the games are connected in some way (Interdimensional? Mind Screw), but for the most part, outside of 1/3, 4/5, and 9/10, the stories are all self contained (6/7, but even then, the stories are self contained). You will NOT need to play the others to enjoy FEA.

You should at least give FE8 a try since a lot of its features carried over to Awakening.

Yes you could just play Awakening without any problems at all.

Playing the other games won't be necessary to understand Awakening,

but I think you would come to appreciate it more if you had.
It gives more meaning to the spotpass/dlc characters. =/

You should really give Fire Emblem (no subtitle) a try.
