Updated Marriage, Children, and Inheritance FAQ v2

The former topic was accidentally locked, rendering it nearly useless. This topic is largely the same, but with a couple of edits.

If you still have unanswered questions about the basics, please refer to my source:

EVERYTHING in this guide is from there one way or another, just reformatted for my needs.

======
BASICS
======
Before I say anything else, you should know that I refer to all classes here as their BASE CLASS. In other words, even though it is Dark Pegasus that learns Lightning Speed, I will be referring to the inheritance of "Pegasus Knight" (the base class that upgrades into Dark Pegasus).

Achieve an S support rank to marry (only one S rank is possible per character). Because you have to intentionally activate the support conversation to reach support rank S between any two characters, there's no concern about "accidentally" causing an undesirable marriage. Chrom is the exception here, because Chrom will automatically marry Avatar-F, Sumia, Maribelle, Sully, or Olivia at the end of Chapter 11, depending on who he has the most support points with (no Support ranks required). Making sure that Chrom does not over-support the other girls is something you need to watch out for (note that if he gets absolutely no support with any of his marriage candidates, he will marry a generic village girl instead which will totally ruin his daughter's potential). If he has equal support levels with multiple candidates, the game prioritizes in this order: Sumia -> Mariabel -> Soiree -> Olivia -> Avatar. Finally, it's worth noting that Olivia joins you at the BEGINNING of Chapter 11, but can still become Chrom's bride. To do this, simply make sure that Chrom amasses NO support with any of the other candidates, then make sure that he spends the entirity of Chapter 11 adjacent to/Pair Up'd with her to amass Support points.

Children's maximum stat modifiers are (Mom's max stat mods + Dad's max stat mods + 1 to each stat). The exception to this is if Avatar marries a child character; because the child character already has the +1 to each stat, Morgan will not get an ADDITIONAL +1 (although since s/he will already have Avatar's stat mods + child's stat mods, the mods will already be through the roof).

Parents pass down their available job classes as well as a single skill (per parent), which is the FIFTH (last) skill equipped on them AT THE TIME YOU ENTER THE SIDEQUEST. Chrom is an exception in that he will always pass down Royal Weapon (male kids) or Aether (female kidS) even if he doesn't know either one.

Note that if a parents attempts to pass on a gender-specific class to their child, the class will be "exchanged" for an appropriate one for the recieving gender. This is occasionally helpful, since Gaius and Donnel have the Fighter class which becomes the important Pegasus Knight class for female children.

AVATAR AND MORGAN

Avatar's inheritable stat maximums are based off of the Asset/Flaw stats chosen at the beginning of the game.

The Avatar has access to every generic job available to their gender (excluding special classes like Lord and Dancer, but including the Strategist class), as does any child of the Avatar. Morgan is the reverse gender of the Avatar but will still have access to every generic job of their gender, including possibly the Taguel or Manakete class depending on the parent. The Avatar has extra available marriage possibilities, including all of the children characters and the following:

WIVES FOR AVATAR(M):
Sairi
Str +1, Mag -1, Skl +1, Spd +1, Lck -1, Res +1

Tiki
Mag -2, Spd +1, Lck +2, Def +1, Res +2
*Passes on the semi-unique Manakete class

Flavia
Str +1, Mag -1, Skl +1, Spd +1, Def -1

Emmeryn
Str -2, Mag +4, Spd +1, Def -2, Res +1

Aversa
Str -1, Mag +3, Skl +1, Spd +1, Lck -2
*Can pass on the unique Dark Blessing skill, good for any magic unit besides Sorcerer

HUSBANDS FOR AVATAR(F):
Basilio
Str +3, Mag -2, Skl +1, Spd +1, Lck -1, Def +1, Res -1

Gangrel
Str -2, Skl +3, Spd +3, Lck -1, Def -1

Valhart
Str +4, Def -2, Spd -1, Lck -1, Def +4, Res -2
*Can pass on the unique Conquerer skill, good for Great Knights

Renha
Str +1, Mag -2, Skl +2, Spd +4, Def -1, Res -2

Paris
Str +3, Mag -2, Skl +1, Def +2, Res -2

Also, keep in mind that Morgan can inherit the Taguel and Manakete classes, but only from parents who have those classes. This will label Morgan forever as a Beast-type (Taguel) or Dragon-type (Manakete) unit, even if he is not in the job class, making him/her vulnerable to anti-Beast/Dragon weapons.

===============
LIGHTNING SPEED
===============
Lightning Speed is an extremely high priority for any unit, granting them an extra combat action once per turn if they kill an enemy unit. It is granted by the female-only Dark Pegasus class (a promotion of the Pegasus Knight). There are four categories of mothers in terms of Pegasus Knight:

*Mothers with Pegasus Knight with female children will pass on the class itself.

*Mothers with Pegasus Knight with male children can pass on Lightning Speed through inheritance, and should do so.

*Mothers without Pegasus Knight with female children cannot pass on Lightning Speed. However, certain fathers (Avatar-M, Gaius, and Donnel) can grant these children the Pegasus Knight class because they have the male-only Fighter job, which the game tranforms into the Pegasus Knight class for the female child. BE VERY WARY OF THIS CATEGORY. Sully->Degel, Tharja->Noire, and Nowi->Nn are the three mother/child pairs that fall into this category, and it is highly recommended to pair Gaius and Donnel with them. If you wish, you can have an Avatar-M marry the third of these girls, thus ensuring that every possible child has Lightning Speed.

*Mothers without Pegasus Knight with male children cannot pass on Lightning Speed at all.

===========
"ACCESS TO"
===========
I refer frequently to children who have "Access to" certain skills, or fathers that "give access to" them. The skills listed are ARE NOT THE ONLY GOOD SKILLS IN THE GAME, but instead belong to one of three categories:

*Good gender-specific abilities: Namely Axe Expert and Strength Cry for males, Lightning Speed, Lance Expert, and Speed Cry for females.

*Expert skills, which add a large strength bonus when the unit is wearing the proper weapon (e.g. Sword Expert with a Sword). This matters because it influences weapon choice. Note that magic weapons will offer a magic bonus instead, so this is never useless.

*Weapon Saver. This is useful for almost anybody, but is extremely important if you're going for the "overpowered Sorcerer" build. On that note, Mercenary also has access to Sol, which can be used to create a pseudo-Sorcerer build.

*The Sorcerer class, a fairly rare class capable of becoming extremely overpowered with a Nosferatu Tome and Weapon Saver. Lightning Speed and Magic Expert are also very good skills to try and pair with this job class.

These valuable inheritances are obtained through the following jobs (note that for simplicity's sake, only the base job will be referred to, even if it's the promotion that learns the skill):

*Barbarian(male-only): Axe Expert, Strength Cry, Counter

*Fighter(male-only): Strength Cry, Counter

*Pegasus Knight(female-only): Lightning Speed, Lance Expert, Speed Cry

*Myrmidon: Sword Expert

*Archer: Bow Expert

*Mage or Priest/Cleric: Magic Expert

*Mercenary: Weapon Saver

*Dark Mage: Sorceror class

While we're on the subject, the following jobs are unique to each gender:

MALES:

*Barbarian -> Berserker, Warrior

*Fighter -> Warrior

*Villager (DONNEL ONLY. This job is quite bad, but has good skills. You can pass this job to male children, or pass one of the skills to a female child)

FEMALES:

*Pegasus Knight -> Dark Pegasus, Falcon Knight

*Troubadour -> Valkyrie

If you ever have a parent who has one of these classes an an OPPOSITE-GENDERED child, be sure to have them inherit a skill from one of those jobs. That is the only way to give gender-specific skills to characters of the opposite gender. As was mentioned earlier in the guide, any mothers with Pegasus Knight and male children should pass on Lightning Speed. After that it's up to you.

==========
HAIR COLOR
==========
Inheritance of hair color is a very simple process. Here are the rules:

*Lucina's hair is always blue.

*A child inherits the hair color of the optional parent. Each child is attached to a parent, usually the mother; for example, Lissa always has Wood no matter who the husband is. In this example, Wood would have the hair color of whichever husband you pick (e.g. brown for Frederick).

*A simplified version of this would just be "the child has the father's hair color". The only time this ISN'T true is if you have a male Avatar. Under this circumstance, your female Morgan will have the mother's hair color.

===
KEY
===
I'm going to explain my layout using Lissa->Wood as an example. Here is the entry:

Lissa->Wood(M)

Myrmidon (Spd 10, Skl 9, Str and Def 4. Sword)
*Swordmaster (Spd 13, Skl 11, Str 7, Def 6. Sword)
*Assassin (Skl 13, Spd 12, Str 8, Def 5. Sword, Bow)
Priest, Barbarian

Lissa: Str -2, Mag +2, Skl -1, Lck +2, Def -1, Res +1

*Should inherit Lightning Speed from Lissa

*Access to Sword Expert, Magic Expert, Axe Expert, Strength Cry

Now I will go over each piece, one at a time.

"Lissa->Wood(M)"

Lissa is the female parent (as this is in the Mothers section) and Wood is the child. He is male, shown by the (M).

"Myrmidon (Spd 10, Skl 9, Str and Def 4. Sword)
*Swordmaster (Spd 13, Skl 11, Str 7, Def 6. Sword)
*Assassin (Skl 13, Spd 12, Str 8, Def 5. Sword, Bow)
Priest, Barbarian"

The first job listed is the base/"canon" job for the unit, for people who care about those things. The asterisk'd job(s) are the promotion(s) for the base class, if any. The stats listed are the "base stats" for the job; they are NOT important, but are simply an indicator of the kind of stats that the job thrives on, giving you an indication of what kind of stat modifiers you're looking for if you want to remain in the "canon" job. The weapons listed are the weapons used by those jobs, helping you to search for an appropriate Expert skill (again, only if you wish to stay in those jobs). Finally, the jobs listed below in one straight line, Priest and Barbarian in this case, are the other classes available to the unit should they class change later. The fathers have a much simpler setup here, just showing the jobs that they pass down through inheritance.

"Lissa: Str -2, Mag +2, Skl -1, Lck +2, Def -1, Res +1"

The maximum stat modifiers that the parent passes down to the child. Add these numbers together for both parents and add +1 to all stats to get the child's maximum stat modifiers. Do not add the +1 to Morgan if his other parent is a child character.

"*Should inherit Lightning Speed from Lissa

*Access to Sword Expert, Magic Expert, Axe Expert, Strength Cry"

Various notes are listed afterwards in a bullet point list, pointing out recommended inheritances and access to interesting skills (see the "access to" section above to see my criteria for this list).

Add the fact that Chrom will marry a generic village girl if he has no Supports with any of his marriage options.

Also, if two of his marriage options are at equal Support levels, the order of priority goes like this: Sumia -> Mariabel -> Soiree -> Olivia -> MyUnit

*cough* My apologies. What I did was so unbelievably stupid. Thank you for your support in requesting sticky for the new topic as well!

Also, I DID add in the "Chrom can marry a generic village girl" thing, but I'll add the support priority too.
