Never played a fire emblem before. Few questions.

As the topic would suggest, i've never played a fire emblem game before, will I be lost as far as the storyline goes?
Also, are the games linear in the sense that you go from mission to mission, or are there sidequests, backtracking and other things that you can go off the beaten trail with?
Also, how long are these games typically? I'm looking for something to hold me off until monster hunter gets here.

Thanks in advance!

Each FE game is generally it's own stand alone story.

Game is linear, but their are sidequests (paralogues) and random encounters

Games can take a long time to play, especially as a beginner, as they can be quite challenging

For someone just starting out then, what difficulty do you recommend?
(I'm not new to strategy games)

Have you played the demo on the eshop?

Try it on normal (which I thought was too easy) and then try it on hard.

I would do Classic Normal if it is your first FE game, but you could do Classic Hard if you want it harder. You could try out the demo and see which difficulty you like

Hmmmm hard to say. If you're experienced with strategy games I think hard (second lowest) is a good difficulty to start on. As a series fan Id reccomend playing on classic mode where if a unit dies theyre gone for good but if that's intimidating you can play on casual

Normal was a little easy on the demo I thought, but I just died playing through on hard=P

Yeah Classic FE often leads to lots of resets so don't worry about that!

I'm new as well but I am an experienced gamer? Would you still recommend classic rather then casual?

The demo is on casual and I did play on Hard. I lost my healer once or twice, it seems they pick on my weakest character

Would you still recommend this on my first play through?

For true FE experience, I would go classic. It's part of what makes FE unique. Maybe start with Classic-Normal if you are a bit overwhelmed.

And yeah the AI will try and target whoever they can kill first, so protect your weaklings. (You can press X to see the enemies combined attack ranges)
