What exactly is the "Fire Emblem"?

I'm new to the series, so I'm curious.

So there are multiple "Fire Emblems" and obtaining all of them grants you a wish, but drives you crazy?

No, that can't be right.

More detail please.

its complicated... they left out the part where it can drive men insane if someone not worth touches it in FE 9/10

and in this game its said that it can actually grant wishes

Each world has it's own lore involving the emblem. While some are directly linked (Awakening is tied to 1, 2, and 3, IIRC?) there's a lot of multiple worlds and whatnot.

A lot of the time, the name cones from the fact that the emblem glows with a blue fire at times. The emblem itself takes on different forms, be it more like a medallion, or a crest, but typically something relatively small you might see pinned on a cloak or something.

Over the series, the Emblems (one per world) have basically had the power to seal evil away, contain it, you name it. Sometimes there's interesting twists, like in Radiant Dawn where There was a single goddess who was effectively split into two. The "Chaotic" and dangerous one was sealed in the emblem, while the "Order" side slumbered alone. The emblem was tended to by... basically the equivalent of an angelic choir, so she was never alone and didn't feel the need to destroy the world even after she awakened. She actually helps you defeat her counterpart, who wants to bring order to a chaotic world by simply destroying all life. But at the same time, there's also games where... well... the emblems are barely mentioned at all.

I hope this general summary helps.

The Fire Emblem is always generally an object of great importance. It's form differs between the many games.

In Shadow Dragon, it was a shield used by Marth, and eventually became the Binding Shield. This game takes place on the same continent as Shadow Dragon, just long into the future.

Pretty much.

It's been mentioned that the Emblem was a Shield in the original, and this game is tied to the original, but it's also literally ages into the future. You do see a picture of the emblem early in the game, and it COULD be a kite shield of some sort, but it could just as easily be a brooch, so I'm not sure if they changed the lore or kept with the Shield thing.

I'm only on chapter 11 so I don't know for certain.

Extremely minor spoilers (I'm not even sure it's a spoiler because it's just a graphic)? When you promote Chrom to Great Lord he wears the Emblem as a shield, so it's definitely still the same shield.

Good to know. I didn't promote him yet since I was reclassing to learn other skills.
