It doesn't seem all that useful in the long run, and I really want to get Donnel out of the villager class asap.

it stops being useful very quickly, so I'd say skip it if you want, you can always reclass later to get it.

why not?

you can always reactivate the effects by reclassing even if you already have max stats and all the other skills you want.

It's almost certainly not worth keeping Donnel in a crap class for a crap skill.

I'd say only in normal. On hard and above, you're racing against "time", sans DLC of course.
