Fire Emblem: Awakening

I remember in many FE games in the past, there were definite heroes, and some stinkers that you could recruit. Who are your safe bets? I have avoided using Frederick simply because he strikes me as a crutch character. He is so powerful, that he could get overused, leading to the other characters not getting enough experience.

I am curious about Donnel. I remember in previous games that the underdog weakling character can turn extremely powerful if you take the time to level them up.

I'd say that short of reclassing, Lissa, Henry, and Maribelle would qualify as flat out awful, and then Libra and Say'ri are your standard outclassed prepromotes.

But donnel breaks the game the instant he reclasses.

Due to having a world map + the ability to reclass (which gives an effectively infinite amount of levels) you're quite likely to just max out every character if you really want to.

Generally speaking though, basically every character you get at the beginning of the game is extremely strong and, by the time you get to the characters later, will vastly out-stat + out-level the new character. If you want to keep it easy, basically just stick with all of the first characters you get, as they'll generally be fine (and, as I said, no character will fail to stat-cap if you really want them to cap).

And the only one that can even come close to "awful" is Donnel, and that's just because he is basically a Recruit. He starts out really bad, but once you level him up a couple of times he'll quickly catch up to everyone else.
