What happened to good level design in Fire Emblem?

It sounds like you're just saying, "The level design is nowhere near as thought-provoking or puzzle-like as Thracia's" instead of "This game does not have good level design". Or maybe you're saying both.

I'm using Thracia as an example of good level design.

I am not discussing opinion related material. Level design is entirely objective.

Imagine a Mega Man game that had.... no platforming elements. You just ran and occasionally jumped up walls. It would be lifeless, stale, and devoid of all challenge. That's what Awakening is, it lacks the level design that is important to strategy games, levels that challenge a player to do more than simply engage the enemy on a statistical level.

Look at this level
http://www.fireemblemwod.net/fe5/guia/ENG_cap14.htm

It provides an actual challenge for you to overcome.

The enemy employs large amounts of armoured units (sprinkled with a few magic users to break your own armoured units) and ballistae that reach well into the city. The armoured units are difficult to break through and are persistent in their attempts to push you back. The ballistae are setup so that you can't simply rush them with flying units, unless you're prepared for sacrifices, and they reach into parts of the city to make it difficult for you to break out while you engage the overwhelming armoured foes.

There is a lot of structure to the level, allowing you to formulate various defensive strategies at multiple points in the city. If you're daring, you can attempt to break out of the city to obtain some powerful items, which will be difficult to pull off not only on your offensive front, but you will need to take away some power from your defensive formation...

It's a challenging level that employs everything that's important to level design: great structure, great enemy placement, and some optional things to challenge you further.

It's intelligent design, which Awakening lacks completely.

Lol, no. One person might think a stage is well-designed. Another person might not. That's called an opinion.

What somebody thinks is irrelevant. If someone thinks a well designed level is bad, they're simply wrong.

Yeah, I wish there was more variety to the missions in both layout and objective. Still enjoying the game, but those two things kind of bum me out.

There's no reasoning with him. He's so close-minded towards anything outside Tharacia.

I am not closed minded.

Radiant Dawn has some lovely design that would have been fantastic to play in if it were for broken characters.

This sounds like, "I'm not closed-minded. I only like this one thing and almost liked another."

You're being closed minded right now.
