Turns out I might have jumped the gun on True Lunatic.

I've been trying to balance Awakening for myself for quite a while, since I find that more entertaining than talking about waifus or breeding. Most of you know that my last attempt failed.

I restarted a new file and tried this again. Still forced myself to use several characters (in the 5-7 range not including Freddy and Kellam) and followed the same no-exploit guidelines, but this time I made a conscious effort to marry characters off. Many of the children Paralogues are surprisingly doable if you turtle, forge, and take advantage of stat potions, even on Lunatic. So far I'm up to Ch.16 (where the game got ridiculous last time around) and have been able to complete Kjelle's, Morgan's, and Owain's maps with no real problems. They're hard, yes, but not unfairly so.

tl;dr A no-exploit Lunatic run might be doable so long as the player makes a conscious effort to unlock the right children Paralogues ahead of time (which isn't an unreasonable demand given that it's Lunatic). I'm still worried that later maps are going to be unbeatable without grinding, but this opens up the possibility that a non-exploit Lunatic run isn't designed around grinding, but around completing all the Paralogues.

Someone else needs to test this because I need more data.

Also I didn't use Panne on either run, who is apparently incredible on Lunatic with some early babying. I'd like to hear thoughts on how she plays in a restricted run.

When I tried her durability wasn't good enough.

Xenoblade is the spiritual successor of FF12.
999 and Zero Escape both deserve are Visual Novels to DIE for.

I hope so. If other people try this and we can come up with some way to make a reasonable challenge run that balances the highest difficulty (Lunatic+ is beyond repair), then I might have to revise my review score. Being able to have a satisfying challenge in a strategy RPG is sort of a big deal.

This.

I grinded her to 30 (figured that'd be about on par with my promoted units) in EXPonential Growth as soon as I could buy Beaststones, to see if she'd be worth it. She handled the unpromoted enemies okay, but that's also around when the game begins to throw a lot more promoted ones at you. She handled Chapter 14 okay (keep in mind, I bottleneck the bridges, she just ran around picking off fliers) but died absurdly quickly in 15. And keep in mind, that's with heavy grinding.

That said, considering how I generally marry my characters off ASAP, I also already had Morgan by chapter 14. So Panne really didn't seem to excel by comparison.

Now WestbrickV will make another review. I'm just glad you are enjoying the game.

Taguel is bloody terrible, though. Reclass her to a not-terrible class and Panne's solid growths/stats work out really nicely.

I always enjoyed the game -- it's just badly designed, and part of the problem was that I didn't feel balancing Lunatic was really possible. If that isn't necessarily true and Lunatic can be reasonably balanced with Paralogue planning, then some of my criticisms don't hold.

Basically I just need more data and others' experience.
