I like how we've established that this is a term used in several games (one of which has had a user base of up to 12 million people), yet you still claim it's an "esoteric" term just because you personally aren't familiar with it.

Noun
jargon
1. A technical terminology unique to a particular subject.

That subject being WoW (and D&D). Which is why it's esoteric.

Name a game where people REGULARLY say "proc" that isn't an MMO. Because I've never heard it, despite your insistence that everyone says it.

Any game with a community that has things other than crits that are random chance to occur on attack.

Seems the exception is the older FE boards.

The older FEs don't really have anything but crits.

I k ow, but he used that as an example iirc, and there is astra and such in 9 and 10.

Using bold because there's some arbitrary quote block limit

The Binding of Isaac

Not a multiplayer game, and I've only heard one guy say proc ever.

Fire Emblem (wasn't expecting to find this, but I guess anything goes on an "Off Topic" board)

We're already on a fire emblem board. That doesn't count.

TF2 again

I've never, EVER heard anyone say proc on the steam forums before.

Borderlands

Haven't played it

X-COM: Enemy Unknown (it's in the reply to the second quote)

Never played it

Skyrim

Got it recently, don't even know any random effects up to this point. Though haven't honestly gotten enough progress to bother with forums yet

Dungeons of Dredmor

never played it

Modern Warfare 3, for cripe's sake!

Dont care for the franchise any more than I care for warcraft

Need I go on?

People who say proc in the games I play, whether in-game or on forums, are a stark minority. Pokemon, Spiral Knights, Terraria, Super Monday Night Combat, Smash Bros, Castlevania (the DS titles), Final Fantasy, Kid Icarus Uprising, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi...and that's just what I can remember offhand.

You make it sound as ubiquitous as "DPS" or "AOE".

So pretty much, since you never heard it yourself, it must not be normal?

I'd never heard of agro, DPS, AoE, or tanking until I played Guild Wars, and I've been gaming since '96.

So does that mean that those weren't common in '07?

EDIT: Pardon me, '06.

Which is funny, because I pulled all of those quotes from the Steam Forums.

I guess I didn't know that your own personal opinion of a game was the deciding factor in whether or not its terms are valid.

You make it sound as ubiquitous as "DPS" or "AOE".
You mean a couple of other terms that have the same origins as the term "proc"? I love how those two words are arbitrarily more "acceptable" just because you've heard them before, where the other isn't, despite all 3 terms being born around roughly the same time and around the same types of games.

Also, here's one from Monday Night Combat, just for you: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=20888371&postcount=23

You know what, in his defense I haven't heard the word proc used until just a few years ago. I had no idea what it meant. It's not really the most commonly used term.

Also, the spell check on GameFaqs underlines "proc" as if it's spelled wrong.
... And it also underlines "GameFaqs".

I haven't heard the word "Proc" till this very topic.
