Pair up mechanic?

When does the pair up mechanic get introduced? I restarted my game because I haven't played fire emblem in years and as a result I made some poor choices in my first run. Not sure exactly how everything works, this seems like the most complicated game yet.

Pair up is introduce at chapter 3 however you can pair up at any time you want before then, if your playing in normal mode then you have to turn off the slide guides in the options menu before you can use it

thanks, another question, how does pairing up work exactly? Is there one main one at the front that takes the damage and gets the experience? If so what is the best way to pair donnel up so I can actually level him up in his chapter?

when you pair people up, one will be the lead unit and one will be the support. Support unit will do 4 things for the lead:
1) add bonus stats: base on class, support level, and the unit's own stat.
2) dual strike: everytime lead unit attack there's a chance the support will do a follow up attack. If this happens, the support will get exp for doing an action, if actual damage was done. If the dual strike kills the enemy, the lead unit gets the bonus exp.
3) dual guard: also chance based, when this happens, the damage is completely negated.
4) dual support: increase hit, avoid, crit, and crit dodge to the lead.
(all dual-thingy can still happen with adjacent unit, and dual support can happen w/ multiple units, but anyone paired up will be prioritize for dual strike and dual guard)

as for donnel, the fastest way is still to let donnel take the kill. You can pair him up w/ someone that gives extra str and def (like fred), but you will still need to weaken the enemy considerably (or attack boxed in archer) before donnel can steal the kill.

In the Tellius games, X rescues Y, so X takes the lead. In this game, it's reversed: X Pairs Up with Y, so Y takes the lead.

As in Tellius, the lead character takes the damage. Unlike Tellius, the back character will sometimes also make "extra" attacks, called Dual Strikes; a back character who makes a Dual Strike is given XP as normal for hitting the enemy. The big quirk here is that the lead character always gets credit for kills, even if the back character is the one who actually dealt the deathblow (in this case, the back character only gets credit for a hit).

The back character will sometimes also make a Dual Guard when the enemy attacks. This negates all damage done by the attack, but the back character gets no XP for it.

I wouldn't actually recommend Pairing him Up at all during that chapter, but if you want to try, then putting him in front will work better. He'll still need babying, and Dual Strikes will be rare because no one has any Supports with him yet, but if they do happen, Donnel will get the credit.

Thanks for the help guys. Is it just me or is fire emblem slightly more complicated this time round? Or maybe it's just the fact I haven't played in years. Still gotta figure out this class stuff too, although I don't have to worry about that for a few levels.
