I'll assume they will say things and either follow up once and never again, or we will never get another Fire Emblem game and it will rot and die in the hands of Square Enix's empty promises.

I'd take Other M over Super Metroid, Skyward Sword over OoT, FE11 over FE7, and fresh molten crap smeared all over my face over Persona 2. Come at me.

I know it's fun to circle jerk about Square Enix but it's just the Toriyama games like FF13 or Front Mission Evolved that suffer. They have continued to create excellent games for portables and Nomura's console games look great. If we look at the SRPG genre in particular the company has created the greatest ones ever. People like Matsuno are no longer there but they still have the people that worked under him on Tactics Ogre. FFTA2 might be their most recent original SRPG and though the story is weak the game play is stellar. If we're talking hypotheticals where someone besides Intelligent Systems carries the torch Square Enix is the best in the field. Special mention to Atlus I found Devil Survivor to be very fun. NIS is very popular but they aren't my taste and the only people left who make SRPGs are some pretty low tier efforts like the Luminous Arc people.

FFTA2 plays like someone dropped their Final Fantasy cart into ice-cold molasses. FFTA at least kinda had the excuse of being a GBA game that could barely handle all those moving sprites, but FFTA2 doesn't have a real excuse. And Tactics Ogre is so fundamentally flawed from a design standpoint that it's not that great either.

Wow I don't even know how to engage with someone who thinks Tactics Ogre is a bad SRPG. That's incomprehensible to me it has always been regarded as one of the best of all time everywhere I've seen SRPG discussion.

Did you mean "****ty Armored Core Lite"?
No really, that game was bad.

Took a SRPG turned into an Armored Core clone. Took out what makes Armored Core work.
...
Plot driven game. Has worse plot than... Armored Core, which isn't exactly known for story.

It's a Front Mission, but.... it's awful.

I wonder if an Awakening Character will make an cameo appearance in Bravely Default's sequal. Edea FTW.

No offense, but what exactly is good about it? It was basically just a clunky slog to me because they just threw everything from every remotely recent Japanese SRPG in that sounded cool without actually thinking of whether or not it would make their game better or worse.

Like, classes. That system should be great; class levels are 100% dependent from units, so you can instantly turn your mage into an archer if you're fighting in a mage-heavy map. Or you can turn that archer into a knight if you're on a map where you have the height disadvantage. But because of the skill system, most units are gonna be gimped if they try reclassing, because they're missing their weapon skills, and general combat skills. So that's already pointless. But wait! Every class starts at level 1, even the endgame jobs, because Matsuno is bad at gameplay. So now it's outright detrimental to the game, since there's no upside to it. And the best part is, there's that fun level-based restriction on equipment means that any new class is dead weight long after the post-battle EXP allocation has arbitrarily decided that the still undeleveled class doesn't need that much more than everyone else.

The whole game is full of clunkiness like that. I just think that the art is the only good part of the package.

I like those systems but if you don't, try an older port. Pretty much everything you talked about is different there. For the record when you say they throw in things from recent SRPGs are you aware the PSP version is a re-release and Tactics Ogre invented the isometric style SRPG on Super Nintendo? Most games in the genre directly copy Matsuno's work, except for the ones like Shining Force that follow closer to Fire Emblem.
