Considering buying this game. Is it still a luck based strategy game?

I haven't given a FE game a shot since Path of Radiance. I've played through Sword of Seals, Sword of Flames, and PoR.

I actually have found the series as a whole (from what I've played) to be quite easy thanks to the dumb as bricks, easily exploitable AI.

However, I do not believe that makes the random factors of the game to be any less of a poor design. In my mind luck should not have a place in a strategy game.

The mere fact that luck is even a factor, that my characters can be screwed over for the entire game as a result of no action of my own, that my characters can get OHKO'd from a 5% crit chance is just poor design.

I mean, some people say that it's there to make players adapt. Well, if the intention is to make players adapt then that can be done by greatly changing the AI behavior or introducing dynamic scenarios. Not "lol you character just randomly died what do now".

So my question is this: are character stat increases still randomly generated on level up and are critical hits still battle deciding (between two characters) factors?

If you clear Path of Radiance, you can set the game to Fixed Mode, which makes the stat bonuses at level up non-random. They occasionally involve arbitrary factors, mind - what weapon you had equipped when you earned any given chunk of EXP, that sort of thing - but there's no randomness. However, even in Fixed Mode, accuracy, crit rate and so on are still determined by a random number generator; the rest of the series doesn't even come that close. If you want a strategy game with no dice-rolling involved, Fire Emblem is not a good place to look. (I'm honestly not sure where you _could_ look, at least in terms of video games. The board game 'Diplomacy' may be worth a look, though.)

I don't like this duchy. Now, it's an adventurer.

I could write an essay on why RNG is good, but I'll refrain, because that'd create a line battle.

Aren't all strategy RPGs luck based? missing in Valkyria Chronicles against a boss is guaranteed death, and don't get me started on Devil Survivor
...and those (%#$*%(# Duskulls Pokemon Conquest...

Only the giant tank that takes 9 turns and always takes 9 turns in VC 1. *Hasn't played later VCs*
Typically everything else was positioning game.

That thing though was locked to "You do this during this-this-and-this or die".
It was a truly beautifully designed boss battle in every sense of the word.

EDIT: Batomys was the name of that beast.

All I'll say is the worse you are at strategy the more luck based they become since it's the player imposing these luck based situations on themslves. If your unit is going to be OHKO'd by a critical more often than not(though there are some exceptions, though none in PoR) you're using a unsuitable character to take on that enemy.

Or using an unsuitable approach with said character. There's resources and strategies to remove risk from the game, such that the only luck-based occurrences are beneficial [such as player Criticals]

If your good at srpgs, their is almost no luck outside of Lunatic. If you suck, then yeah this game is a luckfest and your better off sticking to Shining Force.
