Fire Emblem math.

Playing FE8 (Sacred Stones). On Chapter 8, about to face Tirado (chapter boss). He does 27 damage with his best weapon. Eirika has 6 defense. 27 - 6 = 21. Eirika will take 21 damage if Tirado hits her. Luckily, Eirika has full HP at 22 max HP, so she will survive with 1 HP and I'll be able to have Gilliam, the beefy motherf***in' General right next to her, rescue her in time before Tirado's next move.

Remember, guys: 27 - 6 = 21. Simple math.

Nope. Tirado does 22 damage and kills Eirika, giving me a Game Over. Now I gotta redo the whole chapter.

Fire Emblem math, folks. Gotta f***ing love it.

/rant

EDIT: Actually, he did 28 damage, taking the extra 1 point from the WT into account. However, my mistake was that I trusted the game's Combat Info Window. It said he'd do 21 damage, he did 22. He's supposed to do 22, but I didn't bother to do the math beforehand because I trusted the info. Lesson learned: trust your mind, not the machine.

You forgot to take Weapon Triangle bonuses into account, silly.

Why are you even manually doing the math when you're in a situation where you can let the game do it for you by moving Eirika next to Tirado, selecting attack and looking at the calculations the game helpfully does for you.

Support, terrain, and weapon triangle bonuses are pretty big outliers.

Eirika/Seth gibes her a nice enough boost to defense, but then Seth has to stay with Eirika... it levels pretty quick though, and makes Eirika a much better unit.

Except I didn't do the math manually. I did exactly what you said; I clicked on Tirado, with Eirika, and the game said 21 damage. On the next turn, he did 22. There's no way around it - that was a game f***-up. I just got cheated out of a victory. Same tile, no Seth (didn't even bring him), didn't suddenly change to a different weapon type (Eirika can only use swords anyway), etc. I suppose Tirado just pulled the extra point out of his hairy ass.

Lance > Sword
Weapon triangle bonus lets Tirado deal an extra damage onto Eirika.

To clarify, Eirika would take 20 damage from him, but the +1 MT he has due to him being a lance user gives him 21 damage against her. However, he did 22.

ITP: Guy doesn't read what I said above. "I clicked on Tirado, with Eirika, and the game said 21 damage". I like this series, but I can accept when something goes wrong. Thankfully, I am still a fan and not yet a mindless fanboy.

Look, the game doesn't just randomly sneak in extra damages. You messed up somewhere and are trying to put the blame on something unreasonable.

'Kay, just beat the chapter. I clicked on him with Eirika again and the game said 21 MT, just like last time. I would've tried it again, but I know better now. So I let Franz go ham with an Armorslayer. The end. I'm really enjoying this game so far, but none of the characters have really made me smile yet, which Awakening was able to do relatively early in the game. Hopefully that will change as I recruit more people. I do like Colm, however.

Impossible. The game doesn't f*** up simple math. It can't. But you can. And you did. Wanna know why?

Against Eirika:

Easy/Normal Mode:

Tirado's attack = 13 (His strength in E/M Mode) + 14 (Might of Silver Lance) + 1 (WT Bonus) = 28

Hard Mode

Tirado's attack = 14 (His strength in Hard Mode) + 14 (Might of Silver Lance) + 1 (WT Bonus) = 29

It is simply impossible for Tirado to ever have less than 28 attack against Eirika. It is impossible for Tirado to have 27 attack while taking WT bonus into account. 28 is the minimum against a sword wielding unit. If Eirika has 6 Defense like you said, Tirado will be doing either 22 or 23 damage. There are no ways around it.

You f***** up and blamed the game. Own up to it.
