Best way to level characters? (completely new to the whole SRPG genre)

Should I try to level up all characters evenly in the beginning or pick a few characters and strictly level those ones? Is there a way to level characters that fallen behind later on in the game? Just started playing.

I tried playing older FE titles like the GBA games when they released but I had the same problem. SRPG isn't my type but I want to get into it.

Nintendo is truly desperate, they're only surviving off nostalgia

Try not to let all your characters fall behind, but if you play anything like me there will always be one or two units that steal all the kills and overlevel very quickly.

Pick your favorite characters. You can only bring oh so many in per map (and it changes per map). Later down the road you will recruit more people. Don't be afraid to switch units out, but keep a set of favorites; don't try to level everyone up (because then everyone is underleveled).

Level as many units as you can deploy. Dunno why this trips so many people up.

Don't level up everyone, decide on your units before hand, and stick only to them. There's too many units and not enough deployment slots.
