Whats the difference between Avoid and Dodge?

#1PhoenixBaggiPosted 8/5/2014 1:07:42 PM
Seems like it would be sort of the same thing to me.

Dodge = mitigate critical %
Avoid = mitigate hit %

Avoid is dodging attacks. Dodge is avoiding critical hits.

Dodge is more important.
Avoid is more useful.

...

What? We already have three people giving the same (and most correct) answer, I thought I'd just shake it up a little...

Eh...wouldn't that be the reverse

Avoid is the most important but dodge more useful?
I mean, yeah crits, but the chances of those happenng re much lower than getting hit, which you do not want.....95% of the time

EDIT, actually wouldn't it be Avoid is more important and useful

If you 100% avoid an attack, even if it has a 100% crit chance, it still misses and does nothing.

Avoid is much more important. Dodge is only crucial in a select few circumstances.

Dodge is next to worthless for the player (enemies have cruddy Crit rates), and part of what keeps Critical builds in gutters for the enemy (Bosses with LCK makes your Crit rates much lower, which if you're crit building you're relying on at the cost of a large chunk of standard aggression, which can easily be disastrous).

Avoid is -THE- best thing for Defense [past... defense (provided hard DEF/RES can give enough EHP to completely outlast or hit negation thresholds)], since:
1. It can, in fact, be made to be reliable. [100% Avoidance exists]
2. It's ABSOLUTE [100% mitigation]

(If you're ever thinking to use some defensive abilities beyond Vantage [turns defense into offense and a shot at "Kill them first"]... go for Avoid [unless Hard DEF/RES is hitting Negation]. It works wonders, unlike... say PavGis)

No, it's definitely what I said. Without enough dodge, you face crit rates, and crit rates are really bad, since you don't really want to have random chances to simply game over from a crit. Dodge is very important. But the threshold tends to be fairly low (mostly, the +10 dodge from pair up should cover most enemy crit rates), which means that once you have a reasonable amount, avoid is better. Avoid isn't usually 'important' since you rarely want to rely on it entirely, unless you can get enemies down to 0% hit rates (mostly only happens vs. axe users and/or with breakers) but it's extremely useful in general, to avoid more attacks. So I stand by what I said. Dodge is more important, but less useful, while avoid is more useful, but less important.
