Why did they remaster this and not VII?

VII is terrible and probably needs a remastering. This still plays well on PS2.

VII really wouldn't "remaster" - they'd have to remake it entirely from the ground up, which is a huge expense for something that the fanboys would do nothing except complain about.

If the went near VII it would basically be a complete remake, everything would need to be changed because you can't really do HD to those graphics.

Plus VII was an amazing game man.

You cant remaster ff7, they can only remake it

Because they can't " remaster " VII. Literally nothing from that game is salvageable. They'd have to completely remake it.

that ps3 tech demo they did for FF7, is probably the worst thing they could have done in retrospect.

Would you want to remaster VII with this fanbase?

It amazes me how many people think it's easy as pie to remaster VII.

It's been confirmed numerous of times that they lost the original assets to VII. That means that the pre-rendered backgrounds do not exist in higher quality than the compressed image files on the PlayStation disc(s). Then there's the aspect ratio. None of the backgrounds were made with widescreen in mind. They would have to redo them all from scratch. Same thing applies to VIII and IX. In case you haven't noticed, the Steam version looks really off. The character models are high-res (despite having a low polygon count), but the backgrounds look really bad in comparison. It's the best they can do with what they have.

X still had a lot of pre-rendered backgrounds and many of them had additional work done to them for this remaster, so that they wouldn't just abruptly cut off on the sides. But of course, a great deal of the graphics in X is polygon based. That's much easier to touch up and even redo if there's any need for it.

XII will be even easier to remaster, if they ever opt to do that, as unlike X it's not stuck in the transition between pre-rendered and real-time graphics. It's 100% 3D, as far as I remember.

Also, the 2D games are also quite easy to redo thanks to the timeless nature of sprites.

There's also a PS2 tech demo for FFVIII and a PS1 tech demo for FFVI. There was nothing conceptually wrong with doing a PS3 tech demo for FFVII.
