What is the point of free mode?

In pretty much all of the Musou releases people often say that there needs to be a free mode.
I can understand why Free Mode is highly desirable in games like DW7 but why in the Orochi games when it is exactly identical to campaign?
Want to use any characters to play any stage you want? Once you've unlocked them campaign already let's you do that.

Less screens to skip = less time wasted.

In other words, Free Mode makes grinding more efficient.

i miss when free mode was actually different from story mode and there were some things you could only do or see in free mode...

i also miss when the DW characters werent being experimented on and being given horribly generic weapons and clone movesets.

Free mode is for those that prefers that people dies when they are killed. Because in story mode every single enemy runs away when defeated.
