Frequently Asked Questions about Katawa Shoujo Version 1.0 *Possible Spoilers*

I figured with the influx of topics asking about Katawa Shoujo as more and more people are piqued by curiosity that it might be handy to collect the most frequently asked questions into one stickied topic, and save bloating the board with thousands of the same topic. These FAQs are hence below:

What is Katawa Shoujo?

Katawa Shoujo is a visual novel developed by Four Leaf Studios, a collection of 21 amateur artists, programmers, writers and animators from a number of countries. In calling it a visual novel, what I mean is that Katawa Shoujo "plays" much like a choose your own adventure book, except with pictures and music in addition to the text.

What is Katawa Shoujo about?

Katawa Shoujo is the story of Hisao Nakai (the "playable" character), who is forced to enroll at Yamaku Academy, a high school for people with disabilities (for example, having prosthetic legs, or blindness). While there, he makes friends with some of the students and staff and through them (depending on your choices), learns to live with his disability and the disabilities of others. If you play your cards right, Hisao can even fall in love with one of his female classmates.

Is there any sex/nudity in Katawa Shoujo?

Short answer: yes. Long answer: yes, there are certain scenes which contain nudity and sex. However, they are for the most part few and far between, and the general consensus is that they are very tastefully handled. Very little is seen in the way of genitalia (with one notable exception), although breasts are somewhat more common.

There is an option to censor the adult content, which will replace the visuals of the sex scenes with some decidedly humourous alternatives. In saying that though, there will still be some "character portraits" so to speak which will not be censored (though these only show breasts at worst, nothing more).

So is this an H-Game?

In the strictest sense of the term, yes, because it contains H-scenes. However, I want to stress that Katawa Shoujo does not deserve the title H-game, for it's sex scenes are far from gratuitous. It is more like watching a film that happens to have a sex scene in it, rather than watching a porno with a cheesy script thrown in to "justify" itself.

I worry about the ages of the characters. Am I reading anything illegal?

No. It is stated that all the characters in the game are in their last year of high school, which makes it the year they all turn 18. Only one character in the game is shown turning 18, others are mentioned to do so in passing, and any "objectionable" content occurs after said birthdays. All other characters are implied to be of age before the games story begins.

I heard that this game is involved with 4chan or /b/. It must be disgusting.

Firstly, that's not a question, and very judgmental. Secondly, /b/ was not involved in the development of this visual novel at all. The idea was pitched in a thread in the /a/ board, where the various staff members met up and eventually decided to create the game. From that point on, all connections between development and 4chan cease, as the group formed Four Leaf Studios and set up their own means of communication.

Why do people like this game so much? Isn't it for losers/nerds/forever-aloners?

To answer the second question, I give a flat out NO. Anyone from any walk of life is entitled to read and enjoy this visual novel, and anyone is also entitled to decline to do so. You wouldn't pass the same judgment on someone reading a Mills and Boon novel, or watching Love Actually would you?

As for the first question, the general praise people hold about this visual novel is (to echo the words of someone in another topic) that rather than a story about dating disabled girls who are nice, it is a story about dating nice girls who happen to have a disability.

The difference is that the story doesn't glorify the disabilties, but rather presents a positive and accurate take on how a person affected as such can still experience love and relationships and what not. There are no shortage of reviews on the internet supporting that statement, if you are willing to search. One such review can be found at the following link: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.337440-Deskimus-Prime-Skips-A-Beat-with-Katawa-Shoujo and another at http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/01/unexpected-sincerity-disabilities-girls-and-katawa-shoujo/

Where can I download Katawa Shoujo, and how much is it?

You can download Katawa Shoujo from the website, http://katawa-shoujo.com/download.php. Make sure when you download you are clicking on the full version, not just the Act 1 demo. The best part is, Katawa Shoujo is FREE! No money, no ads, no accounts necessary. You click, you get.

Do note, however, at the present time only torrent downloads are available (if anyone can correct me on this, please do so). In case anyone is unfamiliar with the term, downloading the torrent file does not download the actual game. You must obtain a torrenting software (such as uTorrent, which you can get for free if you Google it), and apply to torrent file to it. It will then download the game installer for you.

Help! I'm missing a scene/gallery piece/soundtrack piece and I don't know how to get it, OR I don't know how to get onto a particular character path/ending?

The best way to play at first is to do whatever things you feel you would do in that situation. Once you arrive at the point where you are trying to get a clear file, the best piece of advice I can give you is to use the flowchart at http://filesmelt.com/dl/KatawaShoujoFlowchartv26.png to help you. If still you can't obtain the missing thing, then make a topic and there will be no shortage of people happy to help.

I think that should cover everything. If anyone has any suggestions for things I should add, please don't hesitate to let me know so I can draft a Version 1.1 or something. Thanks for reading, guys!

Possibly consider linking to one of the many well written professional reviews/articles about the game? I know I personally wouldn't just outright trust a sticky on the board for a game, especially when it comes to a game so different like Katawa Shoujo.

Added a link to a review from The Escapist forums. Is that to your satisfaction?

Perhaps you could link to the Kotaku Australia review/article on KS? I found it to be one of the best around.

First of all, yes they are.

Second, most of the questions in actual FAQs aren't asked "frequently" generally because they're either easy to answer yourself or because they've been answered by the FAQ, the latter of which is entirely the point of having one.

Want to add my explanation on how to tell if you got a good ending?

All the good endings will have a video of the girl's art evolution playing with the end credits rolling up the righthand side; all other endings (neutral or bad) will just have the credits rolling up the center.

So just watch the end credits if you aren't sure.
