1, The anime is loosely based on the games.
2. It's a physical object that explodes on impact. The idea of a Normal type at least being thrown back isn't that far out there.

In the anime drill run can hit flyers
You can catch stone edge and throw them back
Thunder armor
Pretty much every single contest combination without use of props
etc

No Ghost immunity, "Aim for the horn!",
And everyone wishes Piplup had never been born.
Pinsir with Tackle, Pikachu with Leer,
When it comes to mistakes, the show is without peer.

The anime is a little more realistic when it comes to fighting/battling, not by much, but.. you get what I mean.

This topic is funny. It's assuming the games make more sense than the anime, when the games themselves are totally inconsistant with themselves and make less sense than the anime ever has.

I always wondered why electric beats flying, when I'm pretty it's attracted to things ON the ground.

What would prevent Drill Run from hitting a Flying Pokemon, really? It's basically a drill tackle.

Stone Edge? Objects are being thrown. Is it so crazy to think of throwing them back?

Thunder Armour was a reference to another anime series.

Contest combinations without props? I don't get the big deal.
