Does gen IV have any redeeming qualities?

All of Gen III is bad.

As for HGSS, it may be based on a game with badly made regions, but in terms of features and Pokémon available (all Gen I and III main legendaries and starters was great), it was great.

Gen V is hands down the best either way.

Emerald was the 2nd best game in the series, and with the remakes even the downers will see the true glory of Hoenn, but I agree with your final statement

Well I don't like Hoenn, its characters, Pokémon (with a few exceptions) or music (barring Victory Road!). So while Emerald did have cool features like the Battle Frontier, it's difficult for me to call it a good game, especially when half of what Gen III added has been improved on since.

for your listening (dis)pleasure http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sC0cvwnG0Ik

also i mean the trainers' level curve (i mean lv40~50 E4? come on)

and i honestly found training in the underleveled E4 horribly painful (red had good leveled pokes but you had to go through the E4 every time <_<)

also kanto shouldn't be nearly featureless because of a 3-year gap (almost nothing to explore lol)

You think the Kanto remixes sound worse than random beeps?

Silver's Pokemon get a decent level spike after the E4. Also decent post game leveling wasn't even a thought until Diamond/Pearl. Mt.Silver takes Cerulean Cave's place as the endgame dungeon for training. You also have cellphone too.

The only things you don't get is Cerulean Cave, Cinnabar (because of the eruption), and Mt.Moon. Power Plant is in use by human beings. Seafoam Isles is used for Blaine's gym Safari Zone is added in HGSS (not that I ever cared for the Cheating Zone). Therefore there's no events to be had outside of chasing out the remnants of the Rockets.

removing safari zone was like the only thing gen 2 kanto did right

also oh god gen 2 rocket they were doing so well until "BAWW WE NEED GIOVANNI EVEN THOUGH WE ALMOST FULFILLED OUR PLANS"

and yes i absolutely hate the gen 2 remakes of gen 1 music (HG/SS tried their best to fix them but there are still some bad tunes OH GOD LAVENDER)

What plans? All they wanted to do was make money by selling SlowpokeTails and turning the Lake of Rage into a tourist trap. Hardly the stuff of diabolical minds.

The incredible size and diversity of the Sinnoh region.

Half that region was dominated by a mountain range. Hoenn was more varied.

However, Gen 4 gave us:
1. The Physical/Special Split
2. The Pokeathlon
3. Seals
4. The Physical/Special Split

I don't care what you say, Generation II sucks.
That's just my opinion, no matter how true it may be.
