Seems to me that it's more or less a matter of what rod you use. Can anyone give concrete examples of differences? Also, I know this is not the right board, but I'd like the same for FireRed also.

Since there's only one rod in Generation V, that aspect of fishing doesn't apply anymore.

The type of rod determine some rare to find species or the evolved forms of water Pokemon, I member Old Rod getting mostly low level Magikarp.

Different areas means different Pokemon, much like grassy areas.
