So I'm 10 minutes into my first city and it's a total failure

I don't understand

I built a large strip of green area for residential, about 50% is filled

I built a small strip far away for yellow, it's filled

I built a small strip near with blue, it's about 80% filled and a few say they are closed because of no workers

I see there is demand for residential and nothing else, but 50% of the residential I zoned isn't being used ..

I have water and power running, and I built a Town Hall because citizens requested it

I'm making $470 an hour, and losing $750 an hour, and I have $8000 left

I have no idea what I'm supposed to do

build nothing but residential and then add a little strip of commercial and industry after a lot of people moved in. keep to the medium roads or cheap avenues and upgrade later to save money. if you just have water and power and lots of residential, you should have 2k income easily. Take your time to plan your city as you let your money accumulate.

That's exactly what he's doing. He said his blue/yellow are doing alright but his residential is only 50% full even though it lists a high demand for it.
