I'm going to write-up a quick summary here of what I learned, but along time ago, I sent in an email asking for any upcoming news on the new SmileBASIC app for 3DS. I wanted to write an article to publish on tay.kinja.com, although since I sent it I haven't been frequenting the site much.

But yesterday I got a response back from them, answering some of the questions I had with some information that was new to me. I don't know what's common knowledge and what's not about the 3DS flavor of SmileBASIC (seeing how it's been out in Japan), but I thought I'd share what I learned.

First, regarding Petit Computer, apparently the abrupt removal what due to a certain contract termination. What's clear is that Petit Computer will not be returning in any form for anyone who doesn't have it.

The rest of the details I'll quote directly:

Tadashige Tsurubuchi on Availability and Pricing
We are now approaching to finalize all necessary localization work for the overseas version.
As we officially announced at our web site (http://smilebasic.com/en/whatsnew/), the overseas version is based on Ver.3.2 Japanese and it has just been completed. So now we are fully focusing on the overseas version to finish up. You will see more updaters from us very soon via our Web site or tweets from @smilebasic_com.

As for the price, we are working on it now. The price point should be proportional to Japanese version but we cannot say the exact price at this point.

Tadashige Tsurubuchi on File Transfers
SmileBASIC gives you two different means to manage your program. If you want to keep it locally, then it goes to the internal SD card. If you want it to keep it outside your 3DS, then it goes to our cloud storage. Everyone has 10 slots at free of charge and you can store up to 10 program remotely. And you can share any of 10 programs with other SmileBASIC owners by issuing your own download key. You can obtain the key to each of your stored program and no cost for the keys.

Tadashige Tsurubuchi on Camera Support
No. The guideline by Nintendo prohibits any UGC from using the camera. So you cannot use the camera in your program.

Tadashige Tsurubuchi on the new 3DS's processing power
SmileBASIC is optimized for the new 3DS. If the system variable “HARDWARE” is set to 1, then SmileBASIC understands it runs on the new 3DS.

Tadashige Tsurubuchi on the new 3DS's controls
Yes! SmileBASIC supports the C-Stick and the shoulder buttons on the new 3DS.

A parting message from Tadashige Tsurubuchi
Lastly, we all know that our fans in the US are waiting for the release patiently. It is on the way to you very closely. Please be patient a bit more.

And we all know our fans in the US are very passionate and creative. You guys are very imperative to us. We hope that you will like it and be motivated to create something great.

Thank you for your support!!

Apparently there was a new blog update on their site in the beginning of May, You can check it out yourself, but it looks like they were holding off on final localization of the app to finish implementing an exciting new feature in Ver.3.2 for a near-simultaneous release. I dunno what that sort of feature that is, though.

I knew about the delay, but from this it sounds like it's very likely to release soon! I'd guess sometime in June or July. I can't wait!

Don't be surprised about Ver. 3.2. Nothing much except for a new image filter is added. http://petitcomputer.wikia.com/wiki/Petit_Computer_3

I wonder if when he says "locally" he means saving the actual ptc files to the sd card or just standard 3ds save data. I really hope it's the former, that would be really nice. Vague as always though, I guess we'll see when it comes out.

Also, this is my new username. Don't ask me how I got it. Mysterious ways. XD formerly jamieyello

Apparently there's some sort of subscription service where you can host more files with a larger size limit. 20 MB is a LOT if purely in code. I wonder if there's like, support for multiple files per project or something, dunno.

3.2 is out in Japan. Supposedly, this is the version that will be ported to Western shores. Hoping it will be soon now.

Yeah, you can have as many files in a project as you want.
The memory limits mean that each file of code is effectively stuck at 1MB, but image files are 0.5MB each, and you can have text files larger than 1MB (if you can work with them in the 8MB total memory at least).
