viewmaster_pi posted...90's isn't really that obscure.
But PlayStation didn't exist before the mid 90's... that's as far back as Sony can go aside from using NES-originated franchises like Castlevania and Megaman, and those are REALLY not obscure.
Especially not when he had, like three games.
You had to be around at the time though. As much as it pains me to say, "Parappa the Rapper" was released ~15 years ago, it's gotten pretty old in its own right, hasn't had a game in ten years, and was a niche even when it was out.
A ten year old trio of quality-but-niche titles isn't exactly modern and current. I wager few people if anybody who wasn't there at the time knows who he is. It makes me feel old, but it's true.
And Big Daddy was unexpected for all the wrong reasons.
But still awesome.
Well they need a few shockers for release, and Big Daddy was the one so far. PaRappa's not really obscure at all, though. I've talked to very few PS fans that don't know of PaRappa; that's not to say they've played the games, but he's pretty well-known. I mean, PaRappa the Rapper was one of the two pioneers of the rhythm game (along with DDR).
Of course PlayStation fan(boys) are going to know all of the Sony-published titles, that alone doesn't make a character not obscure. The difference between obscure and mainstream is whether or not people who aren't biased towards it know what it is. For instance you don't need to be a Capcom fan to know who Megaman is, nor do you need to be a Nintendo fan to know who Link is.
