The difference is, in smash bros, one character wasn't 10% of the roster. COLE IS 10% OF THE ENTIRE ROSTER.
Each cole is 5%.
>Fox, Falco, Wolf Different characters with different playstyles. Falco was designed as a clone, but he has own thing that separtes him from Fox >Link, Young Link, Toon Link Same character, so I'll give you this one >Mario, Dr.Mario, Luigi I'll also give you Doc, but saying Luigi is a Mario clone is like saying Lucario is a Mewto clone >Ganondorf, Captain Falcon Same deal as Fox/Falco >Marth, Roy I give you Roy, although he's pretty much giving himself considering how terrible he is >Mewtwo, Lucario Wait, what? How can anyone call them clones? There's like, two thing similar, and those are aesthetic >Pikachu, pika or whatever I forget Same deal as Roy, and technically the same character Do you even lift?
I think this Cole situation is most similar to the Links. It doesn't matter if they play differently, because they are still the same person. There were too many clones in Smash, but I don't think having two of the same character who isn't a big of an icon as Mario, Link, or Pikachu was really the best move.
