There is no excuse. No fighting game, aside from Mortal Kombat, has had a good story mode option in.. well. Ages.

Honestly, developers I believe realize that spending money on balancing and game play is much better than spending it on designing cut scenes.

I liked Blazblue, and yes the story line is good. That much is nice about having good stories in the genre.

This may be just me, but when I go play a fighting game, I want to fight.
