So Smash gets Rayman and PSASBR doesn't?

What the Hell, Ubisoft...

by the time PSBR came out I am pretty sure Ubisoft and Nintendo already had the Rayman Legends exclusive deal in discussion.

Im more concerned that Ubisoft didnt give a rep of any kind.

At least its just a trophy and not an actual playable character.

Do you really think Nintendo went to Ubisoft for Rayman character sheets and permissions just to put a trophy in the game?

Yes. If you have been following Smash news , you would know that Sakurai doesn't reveal character trophies until after he reveals the character themself. If he shows the Trophy first, that means they are not playable.

And he didn't even get character sheets. He explicitly said that Ubisoft made the model and have it to him to use.

Also to even further this , Sakurai stated that he wanted to keep third party characters to a completely MINIMUM. He already has three, and if there's going to be a fourth, it would be Snake due to him already having an importable model.

He seems to be doing things differently this time. He showed multiple pictures and videos of Little Mac's stage long before Mac was revealed playable, which was also a historical first for him. I personally think showing Rayman's trophy first is specifically designed to raise questions about him and get people talking about it, just like the Boxing Ring stage.

And he didn't even get character sheets. He explicitly said that Ubisoft made the model and have it to him to use.

Also he said the model they sent was used to make the trophy, but that's not to say they wouldn't have made their own if Ubisoft hadn't sent one. Also why would they even want one if Rayman wasn't going to be playable? They have no reason to pay Ubisoft (which I guarantee they did) for Rayman if he wasn't going to have playable representation. That would just be silly, and revealing him now will do nothing but generate hype that will turn against them if he is now NOT in.

Also to even further this , Sakurai stated that he wanted to keep third party characters to a completely MINIMUM. He already has three, and if there's going to be a fourth, it would be Snake due to him already having an importable model.

He said that during the production of Brawl, when he also said the Animal Crossing Villager wouldn't be a viable fighter. Minds change over time.

Uh no, he's not doing anything differently character wise. He has not shown a single character ONCE prior to their reveal. Not even characters with 20 times the hype of Rayman.

The closest thing to hinting he's done was the one example you provided, and even that wasn't explicit as it was a generic boxing ring totally different from the one he showcased alongside Little Mac. Sakurai has stated many times that trophies wouldn't be playable characters, so I don't see how Rayman would be an exception.

Why would he show the character before a reveal anyway? He was already insistent that he dislikes information being revealed before their appropriate release, he hasn't done so EVER before (and seeing as how he only has a handful of characters to reveal, he won't have a chance to), and Sakurai isn't the type to show a character making him seem non playable, then say just kidding three months later. It's not like Rayman even has a major fanbase in ANY Smash bros fanbase really at all, here or Japan.

To further this, he said Ubisoft sent him the model. If Rayman were like every other playable character with a trophy , they would be used with on their in- game model.

And he didn't even get character sheets. He explicitly said that Ubisoft made the model and have it to him to use.

As I said above, Sakurai uses in-game models to make his playable character trophies. If Rayman were in, why import him from an outside source? "Why would they want want if Rayman weren't playable" for a plethora of reasons actually. Advertisement, to support the Wii U , so that Rayman has his face out there so that he can be an actual playable character in the next game, etc. And who said Nintendo paid Ubisoft? Maybe Ubisoft gave it to them at the price of millions of copies being sold for increasing Rayman's popularity.

And you do realize DOZENS of characters have been revealed as trophies without being playable or even having characters from that series being playable. Wonderful 101, Animal Crossing in Brawl, Hanenbow, just to name a few.

And generate hype? What hype? I frequent 4 major Smash forums and a few other canvases, and even two Rayman forums, but i have seen little to no hype over him. Before his reveal hype was almost null for Rayman, and now what, has it increased by like 5 or 10% at best? It's not like Rayman is some awesome console seller either. He's not nearly as popular or hyped up by nearly as many people as you make him out to be.

He said that during the production of Brawl, when he also said the Animal Crossing Villager wouldn't be a viable fighter. Minds change over time.

He also stated that again during SSB4's development. If Rayman were somehow getting in, Snake would get in first, meaning that would make 5 third party characters. That's beyond HIGHLY unlikely. This situation is different from Villager's as Smash Bros. is a series to glorify Nintendo. Five characters from other companies is taking away from what he wants. This point is only intensified by all of the points above.

Face it, he's not in.

Okay, why make him a trophy then? I have seen no naysayers answer this question. Why would he pay Ubisoft to stick a Rayman trophy in his game? Especially if, as you say, the game is about "glorifying Nintendo".
