You will probably end up waiting even longer than if you showed up at 11:30pm and were last in line. Unless you feel like you need to be THE FIRST to get the game then just wait until ~11pm to line up

So what you're saying is there is no need to line up unless there is a need to line up?

I like to get there a little early just so I can talk to other fans about the game and trade gamer tags and what not.

My local stores (not a big city) actually have a set amount of tokens they give out to people who show up early. If you show up and there are no more tokens, you can't get your game that night.

... I'm not entirely certain as to what their reasoning is, but they've done it for the last two CoD releases. All other midnights are normal, fine, and can be done with you walking in 12:05, but CoD ends up going quickly enough that 11:30 is really cutting it close (I missed out last year. I went across the street to FYE, where I didn't even have a preorder and did fine, but it was annoying.

What did I just read? Isn't it the opposite... well it is here in New Zealand , I don't live in America so I don't know about the game shops there.

Yeah, I would cancel my preorder if any stores did that and give my business to another store.
