The game is pretty hard until you get to the overworld map. Then it just becomes hard to navigate.

Advice:
Save often

Don't keep your demons - fuse them to get better ones

Recruit a bunch of demons before the boss fights, but don't fuse them. Start the boss fight once to see what the boss does and then fuse your demons to counter that (if the boss is weak to wind, fuse a wind spell caster. If it cast wind, make sure you have something that resist/absorbs/reflects wind so the boss losses turns).

Unlike most RPGs, status effects are useful in SMT games.

Don't be afraid to buff your party or debuff the boss, though some later bosses will counter this tactic with a punishing move.

Use the Incense items on the Main Character.

Don't go for a middle of the road MC, specialize in guns, melee, magic, or support. Don't neglect the luck stat.

Choose a damage focus - DX (for physical) or MA (for magic)
AG is for accuracy and evasion and LU is for various stuff.

Always buff and debuff the boss.
DF +3 on your party and AT -3 on boss will drop boss' damage below half.

Bring demons immune to the boss' attacks.
If it uses force, bring a force immune demon. When the boss uses zan on it, it loses press turns so it gets fewer attacks.

I breezed through the game on the easiest difficulty. Call me cheater or whatever, I just want to see how it ends so bad.

I do believe veterans say this is the easiest entry in the main series.

Once you reach Tokyo it becomes a cake walk so stick with it. The hardest bosses are actually the first two.

The tutorial dungeon can be sorta punishing.

That is true overall, but not at the start of the game. Basically the starter dungeon is about a level 3 to level 5 dungeon and you start off at level 1. As an experienced SMT player who beat Nocturne a couple times, I can honestly say I was wiped about 8 times when I first started the game. However, once you get a few demons and start gaining some skills the difficulty shifts radically.

So, higher initial difficulty outpaced by steeper power creep?
