“Nintendo Land’s multiplayer attractions work because of the communication shared between the people playing them,” Eguchi said, “so they were set up from the start to be something people in the same room could enjoy.”
“We’ve played the games with a ‘no talking’ rule in place,” Shimamura added, “and it’s amazing how much that changes the balance, even with us devs.”

I also suspect Nintendo was hoping to replicate the success of the Wii by encouraging lonely gamers to bring their systems over for Thanksgiving dinner and play with their family. If you have online play available, you might not bother to bring it with you because you already got your fill competitive play.

Reminds me of that "reason" why Peach isn't playable in NSMB games. These developers sure like to offer flawed logic for leaving out features in games.
