Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

I'm really loving this game. But for all-time greats, F-Zero GX is the closest I've come to a perfect racing game, giving me exactly what I didn't know I wanted in the genre. Over 40 characters, who each play differently enough to make me think I'm playing a finely-tuned fighting game, who each have their own backstories, motives, dreams, rivalries, and theme song (I love the Mr. Zero question and answer session); a mind-blowing, undescribable sense of speed (translation: pure awesomeness); incredibly pure graphics, sound, and music; a great vehicle builder customization; slick stage designs and controls; and nigh-infinite replayability.

I love you, before I clicked on this thread I was going to say just that, F-ZERO GX is my all time favorite racing game and damn may always will be. 10 years since the game and I'm still waiting for Sega/Nintendo to blow me away again.

I have a few for different reasons;
F-Zero GX for everything you listed. When all of my GameCube games got stolen I cried because of that loss (and SoA and PSO).
Kirby's Air Ride. Something about the game was so fun and pure that you couldn't put it down. Another sad GameCube loss.
Super Monkeyball 2's racing mini game was extremely enjoyable, especially after it was the only GameCube game I had left.
Super Hang-On for the Genesis. The money upgrade system was simple yet awesome. The fact that upgrades could break mid race was a fun idea as well. Plus that you could could earn commission for races, buy promoters, and the other modes than it's main story mode was definitely the best for any racing game that generation.
Star Wars Episode 1 Racer. The upgrade system was top notch and the plethora of racers/tracks was awesome.

^Ha--I completely forgot about that Podracing game. I'm going through a bit of a GCN racing game renaissance right now, playing Mario Kart: Double Dash with my little bro. I wish they would bring back co-op in a future title: it really is the strongest asset for Mario Kart. Kirby's Air Ride was great, especially City Trial. I loved the objectives (years before Achievements and Trophies) and the soundtrack. My major complaint with the game is how ineffective the attacking copy abilities actually are for slowing down your competitors.

What else? The first Sonic Riders I played to death; and I was surprised at just how good and addictive Excitebots on the Wii was. I highly recommend it if you come across a cheap, used copy.

I'm still waiting for an arcade racing-RPG hybrid to be developed.

Yeah they're way too many great racing games choosing a fav is impossible. However, I still prefer F-Zero GX because it was super fast and there were 30 racers in 1 race ! The more the better >: 3

i would say my favorite out of them is mariokart 64. i had great memories with that game
