Too many parties these days expect you to be a naturally born tank...

I have little to no experience with tanking in MMOs. I tried it once years ago thinking it might be interesting to mix things up instead of always being a DPS, went into a low level dungeon early on that required little skill in anything, yet the party kept yelling at me and overall was being very rude. I went through this twice in that game, then the same song and dance in another game a year later. I then went back to DPS and never looked back.

These dungeons were not hard. They were, in my opinion, designed to give the players an opportunity to learn how things were done. But anyone you party with always wants to yell at a tank because they expect them to fully know how things work right from the start. They want the world's best tank every single time, and it's completely ridiculous. Some people are new to the role.

Now I swore I'd never try to tank again, but I kind of want to make a Paladin at launch (<3 Cecil), and it looks like a pretty interesting job. What should I do in such a situation?

Also because I know people will ask, the two MMOs I tried tanking in and got yelled at: First game was WoW, second was TOR. Every other MMO I've played I've been DPS. Thankfully my most recent (and current favorite until XIV comes out) MMO Guild Wars 2 doesn't really need tanks.

In FFXI when I was in levelling parties in Valkurm Dunes (this is your teen level area), I would often be grouped with people who were more than happy to give advice if I was having trouble learning a new role (which is quite common in that area since you tend to level new jobs there for a bit).

You would occasionally get the noob tank who is trying to DPS with level 1 armour screaming at you because you didn't keep him fully healed and that's why everyone died, but that's why we have the disband option. :)

Losing aggro (people here call it hate, so I'm assuming that's what we're calling it in XIV), taking on too many mobs at once, not using the right skills, not moving in sync with the rest of the party (?), etc. Pretty much everything. But people weren't very nice about it.

Find different people to play with, honestly. And start as a tank from the beginning so you can learn as much as possible along the way. You'll get better.

Too many people nowadays expect everyone to be an MMO expert. And instead of offering help and tips, they would rather berate others and act superior in a video game. Its just the world we live in.

Sounds like you need thicker skin or that you're so terribly bad at tanking its best to quit while your ahead.

Tanking isnt that hard.

not moving in sync with the rest of the party (?)

Thats really annoying tbh.

That too. Some people will be mad no matter what happens. If you go through with no wipes, it wasn't fast enough. If it was fast enough, it's your fault the good gear didn't drop. If the good gear drops, now the game is boring and there's nothing left to do so it sucks.

Let people know you are new and that you are learning.

Don't be afraid to make mistakes, just learn from them when you do. Own up to your mistakes when you make them, tell them you are getting better.

The first 3 dungeons in ff14 are incredibly newbie friendly and are designed to help people learn. I encourage you to try tanking again if you really want to play a paladin.
