Why is Square trying to shove Lightning down our throats so much?

shes a female version of cloud

No she's not.

Yeah she is. Tetsuya Nomura designed her to be this. Which is most likely why her personality is so bland and flat.

They're nothing a like. the only thing you can even make a case for is them looking the same. If I recall correctly, Nomura had nothing to do with the personality of Cloud or Lightning.

Because Toriyama bealives that eventually the love from the fans will transform Lightning into a real flesh and blood human being...

Then he will be able to marry her like he always wanted since the moment he saw her for the first time!

Nomura did design her and Cloud. He crafted Cloud's personality himself and when XIII came along he was asked to make what's basically a female version of Cloud. That's where Lightning comes from. Although Cloud definitely had a better personality in the original game.

So I just watched the Toriyama's announcement presentation for this game. WOW.

"Not only was the protagonist of Final Fantasy, she was also the face of Square Enix. You can even say she was an icon of Japanese games at the time. Look at the soldier you see on screen. Look at her actions, her speed, her courage. This is what we're aiming for, for her to be once again be portrayed as a strong game character."

"The large poster of Lightning that we created is still posted on my cubicle wall today. She's always there, watching over the team and supporting us. On the poster is a single word. That word is "courage." And that's what she has - the courage to pursue the truth. In Final Fantasy XIII, she turned her back on her destiny and fought bravely as a soldier. Not all of us are heroes, which is why we look up and respect those who are. And that's how we want people to see her."

"Next is Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII-2. She surpassed the realm of mortals and was essentially a god-like entity. As the protector of the goddess, she also watched over Serah and her friends in their journey."

"In this installment, she is facing her final battle; her legend is coming to an end. We want to see her strength, the look of determination in her eyes that we've become accustomed to. We want her to be true to herself while showing us what she's made of. That's what we're after. There are three words that best represent who she is: light, agility, and elegance....The concept of Lightning Returns is to provide everyone with a gaming experience available only by playing as Lightning. Her final battle is about to unfold."

This guy is sickeningly obsessed. Lightning has her fans, but Toriyama takes it to another level. Is Toriyama making a game he thinks the fans want, or is he making a game that he wants to play?

At least it's not quite as bad as Tameem Antoniades from Ninja Theory and his Dante remake. You can see the narcissism the moment you compare pictures of the two. =/

But you know how PR is. Sometimes if you sound enthusiastic enough about an upcoming game, it might rub off on your fans. Sound lackluster and people aren't going to be that hyped.

Of course, there's a *limit* to how hyped you should sound...
