Yeah niche titles were still coming to the PS2. However, most major devs stopped supporting the system after 2007. Originally FFXIII was going to be on the PS2 but they decided to move it to the PS3. Same thing happen with FFIV I believed where it was originally meant for the Nes. It might be happening FFXV as we speak if they even started the game. Squaresoft/SE released FFIX, FFXII, and KH2 one year into the following gen. But that was their swan song. Versus will be the last major game they will release and most likely their swan song for this gen.

By the time a possible FFXV is release we would already be 3 years into the next gen. What would be the point of releasing a game for a dying system when you can release it on a new one. Honestly I don't know why it's so important that FFXV comes out this gen for you. If Itou really was working on the game then it would be great if he starts the new gen for a change. That way his game could probably be the FFX or FFVII of that gen.

You make some good points. However, you're missing one vital point: SQEX care mostly about userbase. The combined userbase of PS3/360/U will be too much to ignore.

The Wii U has none yet so you can't count that one yet and as I said it's a next gen system. The PS2 had a bigger user base than the PS3, 360, and even the Wii combined at the beginning. That didn't stop them from putting FFXIII on the PS3/360. The PS1 had a bigger user base than the PS2 that didn't stop them from putting FFX on the PS2. They already knew that they wanted FFX on the PS2 before it even came out. An user base definitely matters but not when it comes down to choosing between current gen and next gen. Squaresoft/SE always favored new technology above anything else. Hell they even think this gen lasted way too long as it is. The Wii U is set to fire the first bullet for the next gen of consoles. MS isn't too far behind with the Xbox 720. Sony most certainly isn't going to play catch up for another gen so they be tailing those two.

They aren't exactly close to finishing FF XV either. And I'm expecting next gen hardware in 2013-2014. Lightning Returns is 2013, and Versus is probably 2014ish so I'd say the timing is about right for next gen hardware.

You're forgetting that there has been three mainline FF games released each console generation. That tradition will continue and therefore FFXV will release on PS3 and 360. Also, SQEX never said this generation has lasted too long. that quote was grossly misinterpreted.

Versus is a mainline title. It has the same budget of a mainline title even then SE couldn't careless about following tradition nowadays. LR doesn't even have Amano trademark logo. They are making plenty of game sequels when FF been mostly one self-contained story. SE isn't too shy about changing their typical formula. If that line was misinterpreted then never mind but all the same they are looking at new technology to evolve the series into future consoles.

Final Fantasy XV should be for WiiU/PS4/X720.

Also that tech demo they showed isn't want Final Fantasy will look like on the next gen consoles, if anyone believes that real footage of what the PS4 or Xbox 720 will do will be disappointed.

But Final Fantasy XV on WiiU/PS4/X720 will definitively look better graphically than Final Fantasy XIII of course.

Versus XIII is not a mainline title. It's a game in the FFXIII series, just like how DoC was in the FFVII series. Also, DoC never had an Amano logo like LR.
