Galvanization posted......it was only a matter of time before WRPGs took over. The most important aspect of a video game in the eyes of mainstream and casual gamers is the gameplay and not the story. There are far more mainstream and casual gamers in the West than JRPG fans so by focusing more on story than gameplay means you're targeting a niche market.
Look at the WRPG Skyrim. The game has basically no story but it is fun to just run around and explore that well realised world. That's what mainstream and casual gamers like. They like gameplay to be the focus. They have film and books to get a good story.
Leona Lewis (a casual gamer) said it best when she was playing FFXIII:
"I just want to run around the land all day."
