FF12 sold 2.4 million in Japan. FF13 sold 1.9 million in Japan. Why? - Results (102 votes)
People liked the look of FF12 as it was Medieval. FF13 looked too Sci-Fi.

PS2 was a more popular system than PS3 and Xbox360.
If FFXIII was released on PS2 it would have probably sold more.
Can we stop now making these troll-bait topics about sales?
It's not about your subjective idea of "quality", it's not about FF "declining", it's not about Toriyama, it's not about anything other than the target audience and the popularity of the console the games are released on.

This. Video games of series in general dropped a little due to the new age (bar shooters). EVERYONE had a PS2. But even now, there are some people in this hard economy who can't afford a PS3. Check yourself, there are a lot more people with a PS2 than 3 .

Finally note that there is a 200,000 sales difference at the beginning. That isn't that much, and over time FF13 sold more than XII. Remember that FFXIII shipped 2 million units when it launched. For a PS3 that is good

Yes, XII is my second favorite in the series, but there is just no denying that for its system with 13 being on a newer one, that it reflects better.

Because the bad news travel fast. Bad games gets heavily mixed reaction from crowd and eventually people will avoid to get the game.

I don't like the game, but sci-fi setting isn't the main deal breaker.

X was the best FF game ever, so XII had that to prop it up. XII also was quite good at the start, and it was only after playing it a bit, that you discovered how bad the story/characters/leveling system was, and how absolutely nothing happened.

XIII was weak at the start. Very weak, and it also followed a much weaker game.

On a related note: what were the sales outside of Japan?

p.s also ps2 was god console.

XIII sold more than XII in America.
