Why can't we have a protagonist like Angeal?

He didn't fail at all. Not anticipating things that are well beyond your control (like, uh, a goddess accidentally causing a temporal distorsion) AFTER you accomplish something doesn't suddenly undo your efforts.
He manages to find Serah in the Vestige by himself (she was doomed to become a crystal or a Cieth anyway).
He manages to save Hope as he promised to Nora.
He manages to save Cocoon with the rest of the cast.
He manages to indirectly save Fang and Vanille in FFXIII-2.
He'll probably manage to accomplish something else in LR.

Yes, he screws up big time at the start of FFXIII but that part was intended as consequence of his optimism.

I'll give points to Angeal for his design though. One of the very rare male FF characters in their 20's who doesn't suffer from Nomura's syndrome (androgynous bishie with belts&zippers fetish).

He got lucky.

Noel pointed it out, he gets very lucky, and wonders how he isn't dead yet, and thats because everyone else is around to save his ass and stop him from doing stupid ****.

And he doesn't save cocoon, fang and vanille do.

Nor did he save serah, etro did.

He would've got killed by a flan if noel and serah didn't save him.

He rubs nora's death in hope's face by saying "fightings only stupid if you die"

He is an a****** that doesn't know he is an a******, or just ignores it completely instead of sorting it out.

He did the one thing that would ensure Cocoon's destruction. That's the entire reason Etro had to intervene. So really, he's partly the reason XIII-2 happened.

And? He couldn't "save Serah" like he was boasting he could. Lightning and Sazh also found Serah.

Save Hope... right. Was that before or after he and Hope would have died if Lightning and Fang hadn't have stepped in?

The cast destroys Cocoon, Fang and Vanille save it.

He would have failed miserably if Serah and Noel hadn't have stepped in.

All of those "accomplishments" are either not accomplishments because he didn't actually accomplish what he boasted he could; weren't accomplisments at all since he would have failed miserably without a considerable amount of intervention; or are just made up in your head since the actions you listed were actually screw ups (he didn't save Cocoon, he was about to destroy it and everyone).

Dreams and honor dreams and honor dreams and honor dreams and honor dreams and honor.

And when it comes to it, he had neither. Pretty pathetic character.

First time I can actually agree with Snowx. Let fail characters like Angeal and Genesis stay in that lame game.

Lightning and co could've done without snow, sentinels are useless.

Snow: STEELGUARD!!

Lightning: Quick gaiz, while snow stands there like he's taking a crap, we'll save cocoon.

I think your topic title has a typo in it:

"Why can't we have a protagonist like Auron?"

Some weirdo in Crisis Core (FF7 spin off). He was pretty tough, even as the alien cancer in his body was slowly twisting his body into a mindless monster. Or something.

Original owner of the Busta Sword, so there's that.

Zack is the Protag though.
