Do sales determine absolutely anything?

Wii Sports, the best selling game of all time, sold close to 80 million. XIII sold 6.5 million. Does that mean XIII is 0.08125 as good as Wii Sports? If Wii Sports was rated 10/10, should XIII be rated ~1/10?

That is correct, yes.

I'd say sales are only a defining factor in quality when being compared to a sequel/prequel of the same game. So it's fair to criticize XIII-2 for example based on sales if it only sold half of XIII.

Furthermore to clarify they should also be on the same systems. For example if the sequel is on a handheld then that alone reduces sales due to people not having both systems and won't be an accurate picture.

sales determine whether you can continue to stay in business or not.. so um ya they mean a lot..

Wii Sports doesn't count though since it's a bundled game.

DmC: Devil may Cry will probably end up selling more than Devil May Cry 3 and Bayonetta since Bayonetta was too niche for the mainstream and Devil May Cry 3 came right after the colossal disappointment of Devil May Cry 2.

Devil May Cry 2 sold more than Devil May Cry 3 and Bayonetta.

Dante's Inferno sold more than Devil May Cry 3 and Bayonetta.

COD rehash 25 will sell 20 million more than Deus Ex Human Revolution.

Sales don't mean jack **** in terms of quality in my book. Sales merely indicate the popularity and hype behind a franchise and/or title.

I LOL'd when you said DmC would probably end up selling more than DMC3, as it has not chance in hell of doing so
