Favorite scene is Cloud first on the Highwind admitting to others that the story he made up was a lie(and not because he thought he was Zack like some people think wtf did that come from? He replaced himself with Zack, but his persona was ALWAYS what he imagined a first class soldier would be, not Zack as we see Zack wasn't a selfish ass like Cloud acted, but I digress)
That's not exactly a good reason to go emo.
Your looking at it from an outsider POV without realizing its in the context of Zidane. Zidane's character is fragile, he never knew his family or where he was from and, and he was taken in by a band of thieves that helped him despite it. Zidane puts on a front but deep down the man is very conflicted and it comes out little by little in the story leading up to the pandemonium event. To compensate this feeling he goes out of his way to help people and he convinces himself its for a benevolent reason, but rather its a selfish reason because he feels validated, in reality he is out for himself and gets consolidation from helping others when he is only thinking of his own problems.
