once you get really really good at the game your in game credits turn into eshop points and you get pro status on your avatar that makes it really get into the lament gesture.

A bit of a history lesson folks - "pro" originally didn't mean getting paid. Quite the opposite actually.

"Pro" as in "Professional" - from "Profession". Profession referring to a class of jobs where the work being performed was highly specialized and required that its practitioners be held to specific standards. The basic concept is that the work being performed is more important than the person performing it - that it wasn't merely "a job" and that the fact that they were being paid was much less important than adhering to the codes of conduct for their "profession".

Originally you had doctors, priests and lawyers as the "professions". The idea being that the tasks being performed required public trust.

Over time, that got perverted. Professionals were of course getting paid to do their jobs and the "getting paid" part became more associated with the word "professional" than the nature of the job.

What happened next was this concept of "being able to do a thing well enough that you can make a living out of it". Professional athletes or actors or musicians for example. That's part of the context that "pro" is being used in this case. It's ironic - in these cases, the individual is more important than the work. With old school professions, part of the idea was that since there were stringent standards meant to foster public trust, any doctor or priest or lawyer could do the job - that the individual professional would be interchangable since all of them would do a "professional quality" job. But with entertainment, it is much more about the individual.

So it's kinda funny to me to see this notion of "you're not a pro unless you get paid" being brought up as some sort of gotcha. That is not what "professional" originally meant. Resulting in further irony - the folks who are using "pro" to mean "very skillled at doing a thing regardless of whether or not you get paid because the pro's ability at doing that thing is blatant and undeniable" are a LOT closer to the intent and original definition.

I thought I'd be smart and look up "pro" in the dictonary. It told me to see "Alpal". Not knowing what an Alpal was, I looked it up. I could not read the entry because of the brilliant light that was eminating from the text.

Word of Warning: If you're going to look "Alpal" up in the dictonary, wear sunglasses.

ITT: UlNin is smart.

ON a serious note I thought pro and elite were typically one in the same. If I can say anybody is pro that I have seen first hand....it would be Dok and SpiderCVIII. Thats probably only cuz I havent played with anybody other than those two.

On a related note to LagiBaits post. I looked up Alpals name and found his profile pic.....
