does the person with the 3ds have to be near the person playing on the wiiu? I have the WiiU version and my cousin has a 3ds. Can we hunt together if he is at his house or would he have to be at my place? He wont pick up the game if he can't hunt with me while he's home

This is the only way to play the 3DS online:

Have a WiiU, a Wii LAN adapter, and the packet relay tool

While the relay tool is in use, the WiiU cant be used for anything

This lets you connect the 3DS to the WiiU servers, however you will not be able to make any rooms, but you can join other rooms.

The only ways you can play MH3U with your cousin are:

1) He comes over to your place so the two of you can do local multiplayer between his 3DS and your Wii U. This method does not allow online play; only 1 player on Wii U and up to 3 players with 3DS within Wi-Fi range.

2) He gets a Wii U and a Wii LAN adapter, and uses them to play MH3U online from his 3DS. You can host the room and he can join you. He doesn't need a Wii U copy of the game, just the free packet relay tool.

3) He gets a Wii U and a Wii U copy of the MH3U, and uses that to play online with you. Either of you can host a room, or join a room hosted by someone else.
