I got my 3DS copy the day of release, but haven't played in a few months. I'm in G rank and I know I've beaten the double Brachy quest.
I want to know how the online community is. Is it too late to buy the Wii U version?
I wouldnt say so, still usually a 1000-2000 on peak times from what i can see.
A few of my friends have left, but more seem to be joining.
I have no problem filling rooms for things i want to farm.
Go ahead and buy it.

i only play online on the weekends (late night) and it's been a blast the last few weeks.. in my experience, the people playing at that time seem to all be super high rank Australians who just enjoy helping others. not once has a leecher or some d-bag who thinks he's god's gift to MH entered my rooms. thus, i havent even had the pleasure of kicking anyone.
I'm barely G rank, but I always see rooms available.
Hell most of the rooms open are G-Rank A lot of the full rooms are for Lr and HR farms/hunts.
While it is mostly a lot of European players
( maybe it's just the time I play) There are still a lot of people who play and aren't completely foolish.

I'm low G Rank (start of the tier 7 quests) and just getting back into the game - so I might be available to play.

Aside from the last two days, I've been sauntering around Network Mode pretty much daily.
Haven't recognised anyone from here, nor been recognised... but no big deal. I wouldn't be.
Last two days? Farming offline.
Today? Spent over an hour just cooking raw meat into well-done steaks en masse... and trying desperately to farm commodities in order to get skills and stuff for the chakalakas.... just so I could farm bug parts.... so I can upgrade my Insecticutters and Arko Nulo.
So much work. v_v;
But yeah... still plenty of people online. A fair mixture of n00bs, decent people, and elitist pr!cks.
No, the online population is still there, and there's always around 1 or 2 thousand people on, unless you play late at night on weekdays

I've done pretty much everything I want to do (other than getting my HR up some more) and I still really enjoy the game. It's far too easy with three other half decent players but there ya go. I still think they made it easy for us Westerners so more would hopefully pick up the game and not give up too quickly.
Back on topic, the game is far from dead yet.
No where the population amount when MHTri was released on the Wii, but there is still a good population of players. Weekends will still be your best bet, though around this time most players are usually only interested in G rank quests, but with the 2 digital sales we got a couple of weeks back, I can still say you can still spot new players on there.
