No idea what it's like compared to V (I'm an RPG noob :L) but I'm 35 hours into DQ IX right now and really enjoying it. Not quite Chrono Trigger good, but I like it.

I put over 150+ hours on IX, mostly due to post-game. Haven't played Chrono Trigger but I plan and giving it a shot, heard alot of good things about it.

I beat the **** out of IX; love it so much :3

Though if anything, everyone dabbling in Dragon Quest needs to play III, especially if you've played any of the first two. Specifically the SNES one if possible.

I played the GBC remake of DWIII and damn, one of the best games of it's time.
