Can PS4 play PS2 and PS1 games?

I think any PS3 can play PS1 games. But since PS4 is the next step will it play PS2 games too? I know it can't play PS3 games.

It will only be able to play PS4 discs and not any other type of discs. There is the possibility though that older gen games will be able to be played through their Gaikai service.

And there is another possibility that the Gaikai streaming BC will have image compression, latency issues, have a constant running internet connection, not all games will be playable since Sony has to acquire the publishing rights from various companies, and it might require PS+ or some type of membership because cloud hosting takes massive financial backing at this scale.

It's entirely possible that the PS4 will forgo even PS1 disc support, despite being more than capable of it. From their perspective, there's no reason to keep it around anymore.

It can play Blu-Ray and DVD's so that's just plain not true. I'd be surprised if it couldn't play CD's.

To answer your question TC they haven't made any concrete announcements about it other than it won't play retail or PSN PS3 games. They don't have anything to announce about BC at this stage.

My prediction would be PS1 supported like on PS3. I think it will support at the very least PS2 games bought from PSN.

^No because PS2 classics are not ISO dumps like PS1 classics. They are specifically modified to run on the PS3.

And I doubt there will be a PS1 emulator since Sony is pushing Gaikai/STREAM EVERYTHING really hard.

How would that be a good idea? They never said they wanted to use Gaikai for everything at all. They said they are exploring the possibility for streaming PS3 titles to make up for no BC with them and that they have nothing to announce about PS1 BC at this time. This likely means they haven't programmed or finalized it yet. I fail to see how those two statements mean "WE WILL STREAM EVERYTHING!!!!"

Well for starters the new PSN store for the PS4 will start to download content base on your previous purchases (user prediction) and they are very fond of instantly streaming content as the backbone of many of PS4's online services. Why else would they have purchased Gaikai?

I think you're getting a bit confused there mate. That's not Gaikai. That's their new way marketing new content to you. You know when you're on Facebook or Google and there are ads on the side? Those ads are often relevant to you because it looks at your browsing history. Sony is doing something similar but using your purchase history instead. If/When you first get a PS4, you can bet it will look through your purchase history and suggest PS4 games to you. This is not Gaikai or streaming. Sony said their long term goal is for the marketing to be so specific it will download a game before you even buy it, so it's ready to go when you do, It's their long term goal because the technology isn't here yet. In 4 or 5 years will it be? Most likely, and that's when that sort of stuff will be on the PS4. You don't honestly think they have PS1 games on the mind when they're talking about this though right? It's marketing, they're going to want you to buy new content.

Streaming from the PS4 to your Vita/phone/tablet/computer, watching your friends games and taking over their controller, uploading clips to your friends etc. All of that is Gaikai. Eventually they might let you stream games without you buying them, but they haven't mentioned that yet. They're exploring the possibilities. Playing while you download it is not streaming. It will still eventually be downloaded on your hard drive and ready to play. When they're mentioning using this to play PS3 games, they're not even confirming that this is what they'll do or that they can do it yet. They're exploring the possibilites of it. I'm sure they would still rather you download the games directly if you could. It is a lot less taxing on their servers.

None of that conflicts with PS1/PS2 compatibility. They've only confirmed PS3 games will not have direct compatibility. I'd guess they're not mentioning PS1 stuff at this stage because then people would start asking if they could use the Gaikai features yet, which they probably haven't tried to test. It's just likely not a focus at this stage.

I don't know why you would doubt them so much, when your PS1 games purchased through PSN work on any PSP, PS3 or Vita that you buy. They never blocked PS discs on the PS3 slim either.
