PS4 and 4K

Sony has already confirmed you won't be able to play games in 4K. I'm not sure why this is. Is the system just powerful enough for it?

I read that to achieve 60hz when playing games you need DisplayPort 1.2 as it has increased bandwith. It seems current 4K models are still using HDMI 1.4 which would limit you to 24hz. If the PS4 doesn't have this port then playing games in 4K doesn't seem viable.

Also, with PC supporting 4K for gaming, why would I not want to go down that route instead of PS4? 4K TVs may not be as expensive as once thought with a model here, that is available now, for $1500:

http://www.amazon.com/Seiki-Digital-SE50UY04-50-Inch-120Hz/dp/B00BXF7I9M/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1368324586&sr=8-3&keywords=4k

The PS4 is still going to be their platform for a good 6 years, so 2019. 4K may get cheaper and cheaper. Why limit the system like this when in a couple years or less 4K adoption may increase and we are stuck with a system that is not powerful enough or doesn't even have the right ports.

PS4 will be a 4K movie player but thats it. Games won't come in 4K till the next console 10 years from now because they can't even do 1080p @ 60fps. 4K won't be big at home but it will be HUGE in IMAX movie theaters. Some places already have 4K projectors in local theaters.

Also, games can't go 4K till Next Next Gen consoles because that much resoluion will take up tons of space and PS4 will have dual layered blu-ray discs and Next Next Gen woul dhave to have quad layered discs that hold 150GBs. Just because of the size i wouldn't be surprise if they put off making 4K games just because the amount of effort they would have to put in detail to make it in each game. Lets just hope for 1080p/60fps for now.

i agree with this , PS4 now needs to focus on 1080p 60 FPS.Hopefully the PS4 games will at least play at thoses settings , on PC though , im looking forward to getting a 4K monitor soon , rather get that than a 4K TV at the moment.

The PS4 can definitely run ps2 quality games in 4k, but current and next gen games in 4k is too much. Unless it's something old looking like Call of Duty 2.

Maybe developers will do a remastered PS2 classics collection in 4K.

Sony shouldn't focus their game development on a user base that comprises 0.001% of HDTV owners.

There is no doubt 4k games will be the selling point for PS5.

And what games do you have that are actually 4K themselves, and not just you setting them to that resolution? I can take an image that consists of 4 giant square blocks of solid colors and then increase the pixel count to infinity but the detail isn't getting any more impressive. It will still only be four squares. Unless those games are actually programmed with a 4K level of detail, then you aren't really running a 4K game.
