Sony worldwide boss Shusei Yoshida says again this week the PS4 will not require always online connection and DRM on used games will be left up to the publisher. He is repeating what he said in Feb. because he wants to clear things up he says.

I thought DRM meant online only games like MAG?

I don't really understand DRM and what it would do to a used game. A little help?

DRM can come in degrees.

There's stuff that's light, like online passes, or how PS+ checks to see if you're still enrolled to allow access to free games. Then there's the heavy handed stuff like simcity which won't even allow you to play without your system being net enabled.

Some publishers claim it's a piracy deterrent but it cause problems for people who paid for the product as well.

The big issue for used games is that DRM would eliminate the market. DRM would make it so that that specific game disc would only be tied to one account. If someone else outside that account wishes to use it, it requires a activation fee. Which makes the savings on a used game moot.

Put simply, DRM locks a game so it can't play. The Xbox One is going to have DRM locks for both new AND used games; The used game DRM lock will prevent the game from being played until you pay a fee to unlock it, and on top of that, there is another DRM lock which prevents ANY game from running if the console is not connected to the internet. It has to ping the servers every 24 hours or else NOTHING can be played. Absolute idiocy, I know.

Thank goodness the PS4 isn't doing this.

Guess this shows Sony is listening to their customers a lot more than MS. Even if he was just repeating what he said earlier, he was still clarifying something that people were confused on.

All DRM means is Digital Rights Management. So, DRM is used to regulate the use of digital products such as software. Software developers have been doing this for a while on pc. It's basically a way for publishers to maximize profits by eliminating the 2nd hand market.

My guess is the PS4 is going to be using The online pass system that they are using now for some games on the PS3. Some publishers could push it further then that hard to say at this point. Just have to wait to E3 and hope we get all the answers.

Yes. It is very smart of them, unlike what MS is doing with all the vagueness.

This is my assumption. Seems to be the most reasonable route

If the system doesn't have mandatory internet connection there's no way used games won't work.

I agree with the above post about online passes. They'll have to in my opinion if the ps4 doesn't require online at all. There isn't really any other option besides some retail based system like what microsoft was talking about but I really doubt they'll do that.
