Backwards Compatibility [BC0]
The PS4 will not be natively backwards compatible for PS3, PS2, or PS1 games on launch. An update may come for PS2 and PS1 support, and Gaikai may offer a solution for PS3 support <see Gaikai section>.

The PS4 will only feature "Disc Check" DRM. This is just the basic anti-piracy measure. Any online passes will still be available for the developer/publisher to provide. There is no "always-on" internet connection except for those games that require it (think Dust 514 and MAG). This also means that the PS4 is region free.

The Hardware and Specs [HS0]
The first thing we notice is that the PS4 comes with a new controller and a new rendition of the Playstation Eye. They will have their own section in this FAQ.

The new PS4 features a stacked parallelogram shape.

The Playstation 4 features an AMD 8-core Jaguar x86/64 CPU. It is said to run right around 1.6ghz. It also features a Radeon GPU comparable to the 7850. Currently it has a 6x Bluray drive (read only) as well as the capabilities to read DVD. It will also include the now standard USB 3.0, Bluetooth 2.1, and Gigabit Ethernet Port.

RAM? [RA0]
The PS4 has 8GB of GDDR5. What does that even mean? First it needs to be clarified that DDR is not the highly acclaimed Dance Dance Revolution. It stands for Double Data Rate. It is comparable to DDR3. Right now GDDR5 is the fastest available RAM on the market, and it's main use is for applications that require high bandwidth (memory bandwidth). It is needed for the new features to help reduce "lag".

In all it is just a new type of fast RAM that will improve certain functions.
It should be noted that: "Sony has revealed that you will be able to power down the PS4 mid-game and then switch it on again in seconds and pick up right where you left off." Which is enabled by the new RAM.

RAM available to developers is limited to around 6GB with the flexible OS reserved RAM.

Here is a note from OmegaDL50
GDDR5 is based on DDR3 SDRAM memory, the difference is that has a higher bandwidth rate due an additional 8-bit wide prefetch buffer.

System memory (DDR3) benefits from low latency (tight timings) at the expense of bandwidth, GDDR5's case is the opposite. Timings for GDDR5 is unbelievably slow in relation to DDR3 (i.e high latency), but the speed of VRAM is blazing fast in comparison with desktop RAM- this has resulted from the relative workloads that a CPU and GPU undertake.

In short GDDR5 is faster for transferring large amounts of data (graphics rendering for example), whereas DDR3 would be faster for smaller data loads. (CPU computations and non graphics based processing)

For a Gaming machine that needs to render graphics all the time, sure having primarily "graphics" based memory will take advantage of this, however if it needed to do any heavy CPU based calculations, the latency makes a significant difference.

The PS4 has 1152 GPU Cores / shader units and 1.84 teraflops which is basically at the level of an overclocked HD7850 almost HD7870 (to compare)

The Controller [TC0]
All about the new Dualshock 4 controller

Physical features [TC1]
The new Dualshock controller will feature everything from the Dualshock 3 with a few changes. The width of the controller has been changed to accommodate the new touchpad in the middle (not a touchscreen), as well as to fix complaints about "touching thumbs" on the analog sticks. The new analog sticks are now concave like the Xbox controller and feature a smaller dead zone. In addition to those, the triggers have been changed to respond better and prevent sliding off. A speaker has been added just below the touch pad for "immersive gaming experiences" (for more sounds) and they have done away with our start and select buttons. The start and select buttons have been replaced with "options", "share", and the clickable touch pad. Finally, there is a light bar on the back, 3.5mm jack on the front, and the Mini USB has been replaced with Micro USB.

Share Button and "Light Bar" [TC2]
The share button adds a new dimension to gaming by giving you the ability to record videos and take screenshots at the push of a button and upload them to facebook. There is a live message feed that goes with this. The share button will also allow a new feature dubbed Director Mode. Director Mode allows you to give control of your game over to a friend, and they will be able to beat a level for you. The specifics on director mode are not yet confirmed (time limits?).

This is what Sony has for launch:
The PS4 system provides dedicated, “always on” video encoding systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay. Users can share their epic triumphs by simply hitting the Share button on DualShock 4, take screenshots or scan through the last 15 minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game—the video uploads as the user plays. At the PS4 system’s launch in North America, users will be able to share their images and videos with friends on Facebook and screenshots with followers on Twitter, though users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Facebook and Twitter.

The Light Bar adds move to your controller. Each player in the room has a different color on their light bar (red, blue, green, pink). The main focus on this is for tracking player position around the room, so if you pass the controllers during split screen then the screens will switch places.

Controller Backwards Compatibility [TC3]
Currently the Dualshock 4 controller works with several PS3 games on the PS3. It will also work with the Vita TV. This is a temporary list of games that work with the Dualshock 4 on PS3:
The Dualshock 4 has also been stated to work on your PC. You can play all of those games with a Dualshock 4 instead of an Xbox 360 controller now. As of this writing it does not currently work with the PC or wireless, but there will most likely be an update. You can see it working on a PC here:

The Eye Camera [EC0]
Well, it looks neat. It is more like the Playstation Eyes now (haha) because it has two cameras (get it?). The Extra cameras allow for Sony to fix problems with motion tracking that they've had since 2002 like depth and multiple players. Users with PlayStation Camera will be able to register their facial image onto their PS4 system, and login to their system using facial recognition instead of DualShock 4. Furthermore, users can use either the microphone of the (provided) Mono Head set connected to DualShock 4, or PlayStation Camera to navigate through the PS4 home screen (PlayStation Dynamic Menu) with voice commands to start up games and shutdown the system, among other unannounced features. There will be a voice command guide from Sony's website.

The eye camera connects with a type of lightning connector similar to the iPhone 5 models.

Remote Play [RP0]
The Playstation Vita will now be able to play almost all of your PS4 games! It is a new hardware feature in the PS4 that allows you to stream your PS4 game to the Vita. Remote Play works by downscaling the 1080p framebuffer to the Vita's native 720p resolution (while the screen operates at 960 x 544), using the PS4's in-built hardware h.264 video encoder to compress the image. This is then beamed out over WiFi to the Vita, which decodes the video and sends back controller inputs to the PlayStation 4. It is no longer something that developers have to labour away at just to make Sony happy. Any controls will be emulated onto the Vita and its touchpad unless the developer decides to make custom controls. Other features will work much like PS3 remote play.

Second Screen [RP1]
Users can use the PS4 Link application for the PS Vita system, and PlayStation App for iPhone, iPad, and Android-based smartphones and tablets, to use these devices as second screens in supported titles. PlayStation App has the ability to enable users to interact with games with their mobiles devices. For example on The Playroom, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.

The Ecosystem [RP2]
This is a great FAQ by darkdragongirl on how the Vita/ Vita TV/ and PS4 will all interact with one another.

The Playstation app will be available November 13th.

The New Operating System [OS0]
It is an advanced version of the XMB called the PlayStation Dynamic Menu (PDM). There is a new social integration of the operating system that allows for twitter and facebook posts/ friends/ videos/ and pictures to be viewed as well as sent. Based on the games you play, much like the google search software, the PS4 will start customizing your home screen with games and videos it thinks you would like to see. It is part of the "reduce downloads times" campaign.

Features [FE0]
There are several other new features coming to the PS4

Gaikai [FE1]
Gaikai has been integrated into the playstation hardware and software to help reduce the time you are waiting to play games. With the new store system you will be able to download part of the game and Gaikai will slowly stream the rest of the game to you eventually having the full game downloaded to your hard drive. Basically Gaikai reduces the wall between you and digital games.

Gaikai is also a game streaming service that Sony is hoping to use to stream PS3 games to the PS4. Because the Gaikai servers will be calculating everything, this is an online only service much like Netflix.

Cloud Service available in 2014. Allows PS3 BC.

Media Services [FE2]
Sony Entertainment Programming is a new video and music streaming surface under one Sony application. Most likely this will be the 4k movie service that was announced. Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited are still available and accessible day 1. Netflix, Flixster, and Redbox will be other apps that are supported under media services. New TV apps may be coming to the PS4 including an MTV channel. Details on this to come.

The ESPN apps as of now are no longer exclusive and may be removed entirely.

Other Stuff [FE3]
4k: Yes 4k resolution will be available for the PS4. It will be available for movies and everything else (except games), but right now 4k movies are around 100GB of data. Sony is looking into a 4k movie service for the PS4. No games will be played in 4k resolution.

Backwards Compatability: It is possible to stream games with Gaikai to the PS4, but nothing will be native. Sony is looking into using Gaikai to solve the problem.

Playstation Move: Yes it is still around.

Instant On Feature: As explained in the RAM section, the PS4 will boot up in 5 seconds and you will be able to start off where you left off. No more leaving your console on because you can't find a save point.

Sony stuff compatability: They've said that TVs, headsets, tablets, and phones will still be compatible.

Cross-game-chat: Yes. Up to 8 friends.

Party System: Yes. Up to 8 friends.

Background Music Player: You can listen to Music Unlimited in the background of games that allow it; Installed music has not been confirmed. Party/Cross-game Chat is still available while listening to music.

PSN Account: It transfers over and you have the option of displaying your real name through social media integration. Up to 4 people can be logged in at once.

Spectating: The PS4 system enables users to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to game fans around the globe, using Ustream and Twitch live internet streaming services (users will need to sign up for individual accounts to use Ustream and Twitch). There are two ways for users to view live broadcasts. First, the Live from PlayStation application on PS4 aggregates streams from all PlayStation users. Second, users can spectate friends’ PS4 gameplay from PCs, and applications such as Ustream, Twitch, and browsers, which are installed on their mobile devices. These applications can be easily started up via PlayStation App, and users can also use these applications to post comments to gameplay broadcasts. Furthermore, users with PlayStation Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

PS Store: There will be a new "user-friendly" version of the PS Store for the PS4
